Where to put sail cover and ties?

Hey all,

So I have been putting my sail cover ( nicely decorated by the birds) and sail ties down below. This is a major PITA having all that in the way and I'd rather keep the cabin tidy. So what do you all do with these items? I have been looking for a small and not too expensive deck box I could affix to the deck in front of the mast, but with no result.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: Where to put sail cover and ties?

Could you tell us more about your boat? Size, type...

On all of our boats, 22', 25' and now 34', we put the mainsail cover down below. For daysails in the saloon, for longer sails in quarterberths or aft cabins.

Sail ties go in the cockpit coaming boxes for ease of access.

Re: Where to put sail cover and ties?

It surely would help to know what size & type of boat you're speaking of, so that we can look up how she's configured as relates to storage options. That said, cockpit lockers & lazarettes work. As does a duffel bag specific for that purpose, or even one custom made to hold said bits of kit. And stowing it in the same place every time.
Though when it comes to sail ties, I'm a fan of hanging them on handrails inside of the companionway, or on the cutouts built into the companionway ladder. That way they're always close at hand should you need one (or three). And the binnacle works too, though it's a bit less tidy looking to have'em there.

Re: Where to put sail cover and ties?

My boat is 27' and when I remove the sail cover, I throw it down the forward hatch.

Sail ties sometimes come off one or two at a time depending and they get thrown into the cockpit or down below if I can reach that far.

After all sails ties make it down below, that problem is solved until the next time I go down there.

if you dislike the clutter, make or find a sailbag for them and stuff em into that before you toss em below.. helpful hint-- wash em and let dry before you stash em. birdee poop carries fungi.
wash you say?? hose em with hose. fold em and put into bags when dry.

Re: Where to put sail cover and ties?

Thanks All,

The boat is a 1976 Pearson 10M.

I did see a boat ( cant remember where) with a small box in front of the mast for this purpose. Anyone know of such a thing? I suppose I could use small cooler, but that would look kinda cheap.

I always put mine in the anchor locker-keeps the spiders on deck instead of below.

Re: Where to put sail cover and ties?

If you'd like a seamanlike deck box and you are halfway handy with tools, just build one, but for the cover for the main on a 30-footer that seems entirely unnecessary. Much easier to just use an evening while you are on the hook to stitch up a little bag by hand. An old pair of denim jeans will supply the material. A rolled up cover for the main on a 30 footer is quite small when tidily rolled up and bagged. You can sew tape on the edges of the cover to secure the cover when it's in use. Since they are permanently attached they go in the bag with the cover. Sling the bag over the foot-end of the "V"-berth, or use the bag with the cover in it as a pillow.

If you're not a fine tune racer type, mark the neatly furled sail with a pencil and ask your sail maker to sew a sumbrella strip onto the sail...similar to roller furling jibs.

Sail cover goes in the stbd cockpit locker. Sail ties are looped around the cabin top hand rails where they are always handy in an emergency or just handy.

Laundry basket or an old fashioned plastic milk crate tied to the mast can work but you might need to drill drain holes in the bottom. Try to find something UV resistant or plan on annual replacement. If you can find one, crate is probably better choice but not very pretty. Paint one?
Also handy stowage for those forward dock lines.

I thought about putting the sail ties in the cockpit locker, but moving the cushions and whomever may be sitting on them turned out to be more trouble than its worth. I think I will however put the sail cover in there, better than the cabin. For the sail ties I bought one of these. Cheap enough to try out. Mast Mount Line Bag

Hopefully the ties will fit. One of these days I will find an appropriate box to mount or I'll break down and make one.

Thanks all!

The admiral makes me put the sail cover in the dock box! Too many spiders in the cover to throw it down below Of course I'm just a day sailor on the lake.
