Old standing rigging...

I replaced my standing rig a couple years back. I saved the old rig, 5/16" and 3/8" stainless. What should I do with it now? I am tired of storing it, the consignment shop won't take it. No real interest on Craigslist. I feel like the only remaining option may be selling it for scrap. Any ideas or suggestion?

Thanks!

Re: Old standing rigging...

If it's not that big, I'd keep it stowed away somewhere on the boat... That's just what I do. I figure if I have any problems while sailing I have a back up set of turnbuckles, toggles, wire, etc.

Throw away to the trash bin, or sell it by scrap...

Re: Old standing rigging...

I always keep one top and one lower of each length.

The rest sell it to scrap.

Re: Old standing rigging...

My old standing rigging has been prized by my friends who have ranch or farm property with gates in their fence lines. The tensioned cables are perfect as the diagonals supporting swinging gates or end posts in a stretched barb wire fence.

Re: Old standing rigging...

One friend used old standing rigging as life line wire. IIrC it was 7 or 8 mm 1x19, too old for holding up the rig, but WAY stronger than typical 3/16 7x7 as typically used. Would last forever in that application I reckon!

Re: Old standing rigging...

We used discarded rigging for lifelines on our last boat. Found several lengths of 1/4" wire in the junk pile at a boatyard. A few Norseman terminals and we were in business. Worked fine and for the subsequent owners for the past 40 years.

I'd keep the longest stay as a backup and buy at least one StaLok terminal so you can cut it down to fit any stay/shroud.

Re: Old standing rigging...

It's cool for house deck railing work etc. But trying to use given lengths is probably a disqualifier. Scrap it I suppose. Or nautical swap meet this spring, there's always someone out there with a zero budget trying to fix up a boat with worse wire than yours!

Keep the longest pieces in each diameter, & offer up the rest to whoever wants it. You can even put it somewhere at the marina with a Free sign on it.
