Re: Anchor types and General questions

This is where my mind usually is when I sail..................how did they do it back in the day and how hard was it.

Re: Anchor types and General questions

I already raced for 15 years so now I'm not too worried about what position I finish in. Plus I believe in paying dues and learning in the process.

Mostly all I ever saw at our dock in Florida...

It may be that when a fellow has been anchoring since adolescences he leaves out little details. Maybe it's because I let...

Re: Anchor types and General questions

We'll I've been doing pretty much the same method in this general area on and off for about 40 years. Its seems to work and now I finally have a decent anchor although it is worn

When I say I...

Re: Anchor types and General questions

Well, I did it a bit slower than described. Btw, it's blowing around 7 knots now and raining.

The boat turned and the wind was in my face before I went below.

The channel marker's bearing...

Re: Anchor types and General questions

I' know it's set because I set it! Same way as I have been doing since age 17.

Storm just passed over gusts over 35 to 40 knots

Re: Anchor types and General questions

This is a very good point!

I have trusted the CQR that was on the bow of the sailboat I bought back in 2011. I never met the PO as he had passed a few years earlier.

The boat had been on...

Re: Anchor types and General questions

Yes it most probably is an alternative universe.

One of knowledge and experience. A universe where folks use what they know and what has worked for them for years

Not a universe where...

Re: Anchor types and General questions

I've always just used the anchors that came with my boats.

Mostly when I was in my teens and twenties they were just used to hold the boat for fishing.

Then later when I started sailing,...

Re: Anchor types and General questions

An original 20 lb CQR should work just about right for you. My boat is about 6600 lbs and my 20 lb CQR has held in onshore winds near 30 knots plus the ocean/bay wave mix

I found the bottom...

Re: Anchor types and General questions

What I know is that this old worn CQR has held for me when I anchored in the wrong place because that is where I wanted to be the next day in onshore winds nearing 30 knots while I was 70 yards...

Re: Anchor types and General questions

My actual point was the CQR isn't like a farmers plow since it has two blades to give it more resistance to movement than a farmer's plow

And btw, I have yet to back down with my old, worn, CQR...

Re: Anchor types and General questions

So it's a good thing a CQR is like a double plow...

And btw, have you ever pulled a plow through the dirt?

The one I used to pull was a 7 bottom plow and the dual wheeled tractor with the...

Re: Anchor types and General questions

I've been anchoring since I was 17 so maybe that has helped but with this boat .......

I'm indebted to the PO on all this. I've changed nothing as far as anchoring from his original setup

Re: Anchor types and General questions

This is a very good point.

Many times on these anchor threads I mention the CQR that came with my $2,000 good old boat. (estate sale)

It could be that if you paid $400.00 plus for an...

Re: Anchor types and General questions

The 20 lb CQR that came with my $2,000.00 sailboat has yet to let me down in onshore winds near 30 knots. (ocean/bay waves)

This anchor is old and worn but works well

It works so much...

Re: Anchor types and General questions

The old worn out 20 lb CQR that came with my old boat has saved me many times in bad anchorages with 25 knot plus onshore winds. Waves (choppy bay waves) of 3' plus..........with tide change every 6...
