Why the hell is it a discussion? If a 78 year old puts his boat on the rocks and offs himself, that is his choice. I see no point in at the second guessing?

Wet behind the ears and when he gets to 60 will wonder were the hell the years went. I wonder were they went after 60. I hope he enjoys them, a good life is to short in retrospect. Such is life....

Sad! I didn't read all the posts. Was the vessel all he had? Is this the same fellow given supplies by the NZ Coast Guard to start out with? Having had all his possessions onboard heading for a wife...
