Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

I could pair down those costs considerably in Houston. Haven't shopped for one lately but not so long ago I could of rented a small warehouse for about $250 a month.

I wouldn't bother with boat...

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

Adelie,

Afterthought; if they are selling that many at 4k per unit that is 340k gross a year. They are not struggling at all even at that price.

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

I understand all those things, the bottom line is that you are only downsizing a "life boat" to dingy size. You don't have to call it a life boat, you can simply market it as a glorified dingy (that...

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

Adelie,
I get space and weight; this concept would really only work with 40+ footers as a minimum - and that depending on the topside layout etc. But the cost sounds like gouging. It doesn't - or...

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

Been thinking more about this. I am surprised that no one has designed and marketed a sort of miniature, fully enclosed lifeboat for 2, 4, 6 etc. It could be aluminum, fiberglass or some kind of...

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

Just some additional thoughts.

Even on a nonslip level platform it is impossible to stand up and move in a gusting 175 mph wind. You would have to literally crawl or at least be on hands and...

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

El Faro's crew had been fighting flooding and other issues, no telling how much sleep any of them had.

When the ship lost power it got hammered. The bridge structure was torn off. Many of the crew...

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

I have to side with Fish53.

The most significant difference between an offshore life raft and any kind of dingy or inflatable/rib is shelter.

The greatest risk, short of a dunking in very cold...

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

The attrition rate on small to medium size commercial boats is probably higher than pleasure cruisers due to the numbers, and economic pressures of commercial fishing.

I do not know the numbers...

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

As Chris Bonnington, Himalayan mountaineer once said, "Because it's there"

Seriously, avoidance of extreme conditions is prudent. Sometimes though circumstances and sudden changes in weather and...

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

In northern or southern latitudes very low air temperatures are going to make a significant difference. Heat loss through the head, face and neck make the hood fit and seal critical.

I've dived in...

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

There are flotation suits, "survival" suits and immersion suits. They are not all the same.

A good properly fitted immersion suit is much like a dry or semi dry diving suit with snugly fitting...

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

Perhaps more important than a life raft is an immersion suit. If you can not save your boat and you are definitely going to have to spend some time in the water your greatest concern should be...
