Re: Cats vs Mono..why a mono

Let's hope a 60+ ft Sundeer has a better motion than a 32 foot Beneteau, otherwise you have spent your money poorly :)

Anchoring with a cat actually has some serious disadvantages as well as...

Re: Cats vs Mono..why a mono

I spent about 3 years working on a 60' aluminum power cat. One of the crew, very much a professional seaman got violently ill every time we left the dock in anything more than about a 1 metre sea. ...

Re: Cats vs Mono..why a mono

I was thinking about making this very point about modern production boats in my illustration.

Light modern skinny keeled boats definitely behave more like a cat then a heavy displacement boat.

Re: Cats vs Mono..why a mono

I didn't say cats are breaking up left right and center, I said more expensive construction techinques and materials are required to achieve the same level of strength.

For the record though, I...

Re: Cats vs Mono..why a mono

As far as upwind performance, my mono sucks. Like really sucks. Rig design is rig design. Lateral resistance is lateral resistance, it will vary massively from one boat to the next, mono or cat. ...

Re: Cats vs Mono..why a mono

While out walking my son in his stroller I thought of a good way to illustrate the cat vs mono debate.

Drink 4 bottles of wine, then fill your kitchen sink with water. Then make a cat and a...

Re: Cats vs Mono..why a mono

The perceived jerkiness isn't a matter of perception. Cats are lighter displacement/length and much lighter displacement/living area. The result is, the boat is more affected by surface action,...

Re: Cats vs Mono..why a mono

Yep. The currents lively. I'll take a pic tomorrow of the turbulence right in the heart of it. This one is just the approaches.

Re: Cats vs Mono..why a mono

The reason I would like to charter a Gemini is they are within my price range to purchase, but there don't appear to be a lot for charter. So I'm wondering what would be comparable. Probably my...

Re: Cats vs Mono..why a mono

Question for Monte, what do you think of a gemini vs a lagoon (of similar size). Same ball park? Different game?

Re: Cats vs Mono..why a mono

That's what I'm saying. I'm saying cats aren't better or worse, I'm saying they're better suited to different kinds of work. Do you know a lot of Cat sailors that have done significant ice...

Re: Cats vs Mono..why a mono

Last pic for Weavis. If you don't think I know anything about catamarans, this former Archbishop of Cape Town and Nobel Peace prize winner thinks I know my Cats.

I think Cats are sweet, but my...

Re: Cats vs Mono..why a mono

Oh, and I've spent some time in open water on big Cats too. Of course, she doesn't look too big here because only the bridge deck can be seen above the seas.

Re: Cats vs Mono..why a mono

Did I mention I'm full time Captain of a 700 passenger commercial (power) cat and have some insight into the benefits and limitations of the catamaran design?

Re: Cats vs Mono..why a mono

I own a mono, but am no way against cats aside from price. My 35' mono is both pretty and spacious. She doesn't have the sleek lines of a racer or racer cruiser, but she has salty good looks.

Re: Cats vs Mono..why a mono

Answering the OPs question, I think the biggest factor in mono vs cat isn't beauty, survivability, speed, windward ability or what ever. It's cost. Cats are expensive. I paid $17500 for my 35'...
