Re: A way To Save Charging Time

Voltage variation. An overly simplistic explanation, but it will give you the idea: when you operate a device with a high Amp draw, you pull down the "surface voltage" on the plates in your batteries...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

According to the Fluke website:
This product is discontinued or reclassified

Which is why you may be able to pick one up for less than the original list price. But is doesn't seem to do anything...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

Yep, you're right (but it is about AUD400 :) )

I looked at the Fluke 375 when I checked the price Amazon price. Didn't realise that that one has Bluetooth connectivity as well.

Edit: One...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

Yep, for over $400, compared to about $70 for the Mastech :)

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

I bought a Mastech MS2115A over the internet. Much cheaper than a similar Fluke and it does everything needed for your typical boat trouble shooting requirements.

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

Doh! Didn't notice it was AC clamp only. Ignore my last post. DC Clamp is needed for troubleshooting boat systems.

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

I use mine a lot. Great for trouble shooting electrics.

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

True. To do an accurate test, you need to use a variable resistance and hold the current to a steady value as the voltage drops.

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

Ken, in the case of your 450AH 24V system, that would be about a 540 Watt load which should draw about 22.5Amps. (450Ah x 24V = 10,800Wh. 10800/20 = 540. )

NOte: It will draw slightly...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

Again, 380 is 97.4% of 390. That's what the battery thinks it had stored.

If your capacity setting was changed from 370 to 380 and the charge went back up to 100%, that means that another...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

Because the BM thinks that you have 380Ah there ( 380Ah capacity at 100% - that's what you told it).
380 is 84.4% of 450. When you change the capacity to 450Ah, all it knows is that it has that...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

Different meaning of "efficiency".

If the rated capacity is 450Ah, then that is what you should have available when the batteries are new. (but of course, you should never use all of that - the...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

A voltmeter can help you in finding out a lot about your batteries, but just sticking one across the terminals will tell your very little. It really only becomes useful in diagnosing battery...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

It would appear that he has an AC generator which is acting in lieu of shore power, not a DC generator.

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

Yep, all we were told was that he used the high load items when the generator was running. If he'd said at the start that those high load devices were going through the inverter/charger this thread...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

Of course, all those "Ah"s are really "A"s :)

It's hard to give advice to someone who doesn't know the difference between Amps and Amp hours . :whistling:

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

In that case, a solar bank producing 80-100Ah will do little or nothing to top off your batteries. They will still be in whatever state they were when you finished your morning generator run.

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

Don't fall into the mistake of only sizing the solar in terms of what is required to "top off" the batteries from the post generator run SOC.

Even if the batteries can't accept the total output...

Re: A way To Save Charging Time

I'd say that is too ambitious.

24V systems don't charge at 24V. More like 27?
So 450/27 = 16.7 Amp

6 hours equivalent of rating is only applicable in good conditions (such as sunny tropics...
