Re: Advantages to have a small boat

I'm seeing far too many microwave ovens on boats these days. I guess if you never leave the dock, it makes sense (and popcorn):deadhorsebeat:

Re: Advantages to have a small boat

If I was in a hurry, I don't think I'd be on a sailboat...LOL!:peace:

Re: Advantages to have a small boat

Fortunately, I'm a big fan of the origo/cookmate stove. I see it as a feature.

But stoves are cheap and easy to replace compared to say...the diesel engine! That engine looks brand new! I know you...

Re: Advantages to have a small boat

This discussion of small boats got me thinking of choosing something a bit smaller for my next boat. I'm on Lake Ontario, but thinking of heading south once my kids are both launched soon (a couple...

Re: Advantages to have a small boat

I always thought small craft warnings were for canoes, rowboats, and those little tin boats full of fishermen and beer.

If I didn't go sailing during small craft warnings...I'd never leave the...

Re: Advantages to have a small boat

Its not that the bigger boats aren't designed for the loads, but the smaller boats are exposed to much smaller forces....like the inverse square. This is why small boats can often go through a...

Re: Advantages to have a small boat

Re: Advantages to have a small boat

IMHO, the steepness (or period) of the wave is relevant too. For example, a large, long ocean swell is unlikely to capsize anyone...although it is particularly unpleasant on most sailboats,...

Re: Advantages to have a small boat

...lets just ask any of the survivors of the Titanic for their opinion...

YES. A contessa 26 is definitely SAFER than the QM2...but a lot less comfortable.

When was the last time a Contessa 26...

Re: Advantages to have a small boat

Small boats are safe in storms because they act like a cork on the ocean. They get a lot of motion, but the internal forces on the hull, rigging, etc are minimal.

A larger boat (hull) bends and...

Re: Advantages to have a small boat

With a stern hung rudder (no holes below the waterline, thank you) the outboard has to be offset. On my small boats, if it were blowing hard, motor sailing was impossible. On one tack the outboard...

Re: Advantages to have a small boat

Whoa, All excellent points. I think you've just convinced me my next boat should be small.

I recall taking my 25 foot boat to a busy local marina for winter haulout. "Sure, we've always got space...

Re: Advantages to have a small boat

I think the lesson here is that when going up the mast on a halyard, rig a safety as well (a second halyard). Every time.

Re: Advantages to have a small boat

Your comments are bang on.

But to me, the biggest costs are the fixed annual costs of dock, haulout, and winter storage. And all these go by the foot.

So when I had a C&C25, my costs were...

Re: Advantages to have a small boat

I've owned big and small. I've got a laser in the back yard right now.

Big is expensive, and comfortable. Going out in 2 or 3 metre seas in a big boat (30-40 feet) is not a big deal. On a small...
