Re: Bestevaer 49ST

We took on a new crew member last summer. Willie ‘o Da aald Haa (aka Wills) is a very special bear knitted from wool hand spun from Shetland sheep. He was a gift from a lovely couple we met in Yell....

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

When the original unit failed last July we purchased a new one when it became clear we had problems with the warranty being upheld. We were in a remote location and trying to get a different unit to...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Olive wood from Tunisia. We sailed there in 2007.

I purchased similar boards on several little Greek islands and took them back as gifts for family and friends. It is not a timber Aussies are...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

One more thing I have just thought to add about the pilothouse arrangement:
We don’t have room for a table, but the bench from the dining table sits very neatly on the footrests between the...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

it is interesting to hear we are not the only ones who have had warranty or customer support issues with Jefa.

Our unit’s failure was simply due to the trapped wire I (see the post I put in after...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Jefa units are well made. They are mostly machined from solid aluminium and have beefy motors. The drive we selected is larger than standard. It is suitable for boats up to 70’ and it weighs 29 kg....

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Hi Alden
KM were excellent when dealing with warranty issues, one hallmark of a good company. There were no problems with any of their other suppliers.

When we had no joy dealing with Jefa, KM...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

More photos coming up :). After a year of living on board, on the surface the interior has changed little from how it looked when professional photos were taken before delivery. It has taken a full...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

A year down the track, I thought I would report on how the pilothouse is functioning. This is the heart of the boat. It works successfully both as the navigation area (despite not having a...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

The only equipment that failed abysmally was the Jefa autopilot due to a manufacturing defect (a wire Jefa had trapped under the top cover allowed ingress of moisture with extensive damage). We will...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

No, apart from what KM post on their website. We have no website or blog, not even a Facebook page. This thread has been the first thing online with personal information about us. We tend to be...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Hi John
We certainly don’t “live in fear”. This isn’t a lifestyle for anyone prone to that :). We have simply had a few safety items installed as a precaution to minimise the risks a little, and...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I have no idea why the confusion occurs. The difference is blindingly obvious . Aussie stars have more points than the NZ ones.

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I didn't know that .

I do remember during one of the debates regarding our national flag when a reporter held up a NZ flag and quizzed several Aussies on whether or not the Australian flag...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

The "recommendation" by the CYCA was regarding current etiquette rather than regulations. Since 1981 regulations have stated either the Aussie red or blue ensigns can be flown by pleasure craft. The...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Hi Jim
She is a quick, responsive boat . Easy to sail two up, more so than expected given our winches are all manual.

I was amazed that a drone was not used at all for the photos. Arthur...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Thanks everyone for all the kind words.

Wottie, I just checked out how improper it is considered to fly an Aussie blue ensign. In fact the contrary applies. The Cruising Yacht Club of...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

The late evening light turned the entire seascape to molten gold, which must have delighted Arthur, the photographer. It was close to 10pm when the second photo here was taken:

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I am a rebel at heart . It was tempting to exert a bit of Aussie independence (as much as can be done while still flying a flag with the union jack in the corner) and hoist our national...

Photos of our new boat on the water were commissioned by KM and the first ones have just been emailed to us.

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I have been reading through recipes for Basel Lackerli biscuits. Their popularity is not recent: they date back to Medieval times. An absolutely perfect boat recipe too, as all ingredients will store...
