Cost of DC Electrical Design by ABYC Certified Engineer

Ahoy hoy

I ripped out my original wiring and everything associated with it in preparation to replace it all. I've been reading all the recommended books on marine electrical but none seem to show...

Re: Laminate Sails on a small Cruiser

Me! Haha. Not only is it desirable for me to reduce mainsail chafe but my spinnaker gets me going more or less the same speed as the wind I'm talking in sub 5kt winds, though. Something that is very...

Re: Laminate Sails on a small Cruiser

Yes a cruising chute is #2 on the priority list second only to the mainsail. If it's anything like my spinnaker, I'm going to love it 😀

Re: Laminate Sails on a small Cruiser

Yep, my boat is slow in light airs. Under a spinnaker it gets up to hull speed easily, though. I'll never race it, no interest but I want to know how to use it to the best of it's capabilities.

Re: Laminate Sails on a small Cruiser

Yes, I saw that keel project. I'll probably end up doing it in another country as I'm itching to head South and East. Ugly bit of toil that'll be. Right now the seams are pretty decent and water...

Re: Laminate Sails on a small Cruiser

Yes it sounds like the PO of your boat was a decent skipper. Mine, however, should be stripped of his license permanently, Haha. I can't wait to see what's in my cockpit drain hoses. They were...

Re: Laminate Sails on a small Cruiser

Interesting videos. Yes I had a Raymarine tiller pilot on a previous boat and it was great. The boat i have now just has thick elastic cords on either side of the tiller and I use them to hold course...

Re: Laminate Sails on a small Cruiser

Wow you guys have given me a lot to consider. Sounds like CF saved me a bunch of money in the near future at least. I might just buy a new mainsail for next year and worry about the rest later. ...

Re: Laminate Sails on a small Cruiser

Haha those are good answers! Yes when in the boatyard we all wish we were the owners of a day sailer I suppose.

So your boat isn't huge but compared to mine it's big.

I wish I could see your...

Re: Laminate Sails on a small Cruiser

That's a good idea about the headsail handling. I'm not sure I will bother if I end up getting Dacron again as it seems to not be affected adversely but if I get something else I will have to try...

Re: Laminate Sails on a small Cruiser

Hmm, well I suspect the sailmaker that tried to sell me all Dacron had ulterior motives such as that's all they have in stock or they haven't used anything else on the water. I also asked them about...

Re: Laminate Sails on a small Cruiser

So if I stuff a cruising laminate sail below decks during a sail change even if it has taffeta on the outside layers I'm going to be drastically shortening the sail's life?

Re: Laminate Sails on a small Cruiser

May I ask what size of boat you have? 30'000 miles is a lot! I am looking into this sailcloth now:)

Re: Laminate Sails on a small Cruiser

Hi Jim,

What size is your boat? I was looking at the UK Sails website just now and they say it's a material for "big boats". :)

Laminate Sails on a small Cruiser

Hey all,

Anyone using laminate sails on a small boat?

I have a 26' Westerly Centaur (twin keeler, relatively heavy, lots of windage)

I'd say upwind performance is poor but my sails are...

Re: Getting sewage smells out of fibreglass

Update: after bleaching affected areas several times with limited effect I did two or three applications of vinegar over a few days and got rid of 80% of the smell. I've had to leave the boat to...

Re: Electrical Simplification

To clarify, I mainly use Navionics on my phone and tablet to navigate and have paper charts as backup. Navionics has been reasonably good but I take them with a grain of salt in the shallows.

Not...

Electrical Simplification

Hey all. I'm ripping out all my electrical circuitry and am wondering if there's any benefit to replacing my old instruments. Depth beneath the boat seems moot since charts tell me that data...

Re: Getting sewage smells out of fibreglass

Great idea! Yes now that you mentioned it I remember reading years ago that the smell of urine persists due to crystals it leaves behind when it dries and vinegar was said to dissolve these crystals...

Re: Getting sewage smells out of fibreglass

Unfortunately I can't get it without going through the Amazon sign up rigamarole again. And I'm on a fairly remote Island with no stores and have to leave as soon as the boat is squared away.

Re: New Westerly Centaur Sails

Yes, I didn't get a good impression from Precision. They didn't listen to me at all and kept asking for my credit card number even after I mentioned my engine just died and the boat will be on land...

Getting sewage smells out of fibreglass

Hey all, I just took out my "black water" tank and hoses and toilet etc. It was a disgusting job and a lot of crap got on the fibreglass. Some of it had been pooling in a hidden area for a long...

Re: New Westerly Centaur Sails

What's the diff with an asymmetrical spinnaker vs a drifter really? If I'm not mistaken isn't a drifter more close winded? That's what matters most to me. Either way, thanks for all the replies. My...
