Re: 3/4” Star board under motor mounts

I'm pretty sure Starboard is susceptible to creep, so over time it may compress slightly under sustained weight and cause things to become loose or throw the engine alignment off. Because of that...

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

I wouldn't want the Bruce or the Box anchor any more than the CQR either.

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

The majority of boats in marinas everywhere just have whatever anchor the boat came with. And many of the owners couldn't care less because they never use their anchor in any serious capacity. But...

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

They're plentiful because not very many people want them. It's one thing to use one if it's already on the boat and working adequately, but personally, I wouldn't pay $1 for a CQR of any size. If...

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

They're cheap for a reason. Because compared to most of the newer designs out there, they're steaming piles of garbage. To trust a CQR to the extent I trust my current Vulcan, I'd probably be...

Re: Viking anchors-the next level

Hurricane conditions are a different game and often not going to be accounted for by your primary sizing (unless you're in very good holding with lots of scope out). But in my mind, up to at least a...

Re: Just say NO to Prop Speed!

Depends on how long you go between haulouts. If you're in a low fouling area and haul after a 6 month season, you may not need to worry about it. But in other areas, you'd be in the water scraping...

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

There's definitely no reason to ever use a CQR over a more modern design. In my mind, the answer is to pick one of the modern, good performing, fairly well rounded designs. Choose based on...

Re: Just say NO to Prop Speed!

For Propspeed, if you've got overly slow turning props or go too long between motoring (especially in high fouling waters) it may not work adequately as growth will get too advanced before it gets...

Re: Viking anchors-the next level

Personally I'd rather have a bigger primary and not worry about screwing with a tandem. The tandem can work ok, but it's easier to get it wrong or run into issues with it, so it's a risk better...

Re: How much rode can I get into my anchor locker

If you can fit 250 feet of 1/2" 3 strand then I'd expect 300 feet of 1/2" 8 plait should fit fine, as it lays much more compactly (more like chain). No need to go any bigger on that boat, so don't...

Re: Viking anchors-the next level

Some do have a tandem attachment point in addition to the trip line point. IIRC that's why my Vulcan has 2 holes (1 low on the shank, 1 near the heel of the fluke).

Re: Just say NO to Prop Speed!

I've been just priming my props and using bottom paint on them with good results. It has held up better than expected and does just fine at keeping growth down.

Re: Banging on starter?

Generally that means the solenoid or another moving part is sticking. So it's time for a starter rebuild or replacement, as it's likely to get worse and then eventually fail entirely.

Re: CO detectors, marine or regular model?

3 sources. 2 engines (exhaust out the transom) and a generator (exhausts just forward of midship on the stbd side). CO detectors in each of the 3 cabin spaces (salon, forward, and aft cabins). ...

Re: What size is the original anchor on a Lavezzi

The performance in the Panope tests is what makes me say the Viking is a good performer. But they seem to take the approach that better performance means you can just use a smaller anchor and stick...

Re: Broad reach - should I use my main?

Agreed. And I've found careful use of a winch for smooth furling while managing the sheet leads to a better furl compared to letting the sheet fly and pulling in the furling line as fast as...

Re: What size is the original anchor on a Lavezzi

I'd get the 20 at a minimum. The Viking is a very good performer, but I think their attitude towards sizing is a bit crazy. Most of us aren't looking for the minimum acceptable anchor. If a bigger...

Re: Fridge 12v vs AC?

As a general category, I wouldn't say they're any more efficient. It's down to the individual fridges in question. Either type can be made extremely efficient, but in the interest of maximizing...

Re: De-masted sail boat

It works pretty much like you're thinking. The issue becomes that with all that ballast down there and no heavy mast up in the air combined with the typical sailboat hull shapes, you end up with a...

Re: Bronze vs SS Bolts for Chainplates

Yes, but that's not the surface you're grinding. So grinds that aren't perfectly flat and even won't cause uneven loading on the bolt head. Although a socket head bolt would be a better solution...

Re: Dinghy Propeller Pitch - Who's experimented?

For engines that have manually adjustable trim where you have to set it before departure, different props may want a different trim setting. And if you've got any wiggle room for mounting height of...

Re: Bronze vs SS Bolts for Chainplates

See if you can find a socket head cap screw instead of a hex head. That might fit better in the available space. You could also use a grinder to trim the sides of the hex to make it fit if needed,...

Re: What effect does shade have on a solar panel output?

If you can see what the solar output is doing you'll start to get a sense of what shading is most problematic and what has a minimal effect. When we're traveling and at a dock without shore power...

Re: What effect does shade have on a solar panel output?

A stay is generally going to cause a very narrow shadow, so in most cases it won't have a huge effect (as they found). It's likely to be measurable, but not huge.
