How many anchors do you carry?

Hi,

I have a 36' sailboat and currently carry 3 anchors. Is this overkill? My primary is a badass Rocna and I have a couple of fluke anchors as a backup. Do I need all 3 onboard? Thank you!

I have Three and its the perfect number. Anchor enough and you will loose one anchor to a snag. Then you anchor on the backup and have a spare if that one is lost. Anchors are critical for cruisers. Less so for the day sailor or racer.

do you really want my answer ?
I carry a 35 pound cqr 270 ft of 5/16 chain, 2- 27 pound fortress a 14 pound danforth a 15 pound Bruce claw a 21lb box anchor and I Am Looking for a real northhill anchor .
Each of the anchors aside from the cqr have 20 ft of 3/8 chain available and I also carry about 400 ft of rode .
Never know what the bottom conditions might be from one place to another

Three sounds good, though if you're only day/weekend sailing then two would do; we carry four but as we're often off the beaten track, we need the comfort of that extra spare.

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

I carry four. Would normally only carry three but someone gave me the fourth one (a 25-Danforth) as payment for getting his engine running (Hurricane boat liveaboard in Florida, don't ask). Anchors are one thing, chain and rode are another. I use 85' of 3/8" chain on my little 27' sailboat (prolly overkill on a 27' sailboat...but am a fulltime coastal cruiser and like to sleep at night) ;-)

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

Three, one is a lightweight Fortress to kedge off with.
The 88 lb Rocna and all chain rode would be tough to use to kedge with
Ive yet to use it though, knock wood

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

I've got 3 on the boat, I'm always anchored bow and stern, plus I have another 2 in the dock box! I've become an anchor hoarder!

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

We carried three. After two years of cruising we got rid of the third anchor that had never been used. The second one had been used two times, once as a stern anchor and once when we changed the chain on the primary.

Going down from three to two happened about a year ago (cruising full time) and so far we never regretted it, actually since then we never even used the second anchor.

Just curious

If your cruising 3 anchors makes sense to me, even though your fluke anchors may never see any action. As stated above anchors sometimes don't want to come up.

Need them or not I carry 3 on my 30 fter.
25 lb. Mantus with 100 ft. chain plus 200 ft rode,
10 lb. Fortress f-16 with 10 ft chain plus 120 ft rode,
15 lb. Manson Supreme
plus additional 200 ft rode.
Rode is a 1/2" 8 plait, so compact and easy to handle.

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

Main is a 33kg Rocna, 120 meters all 10mm chain (would like one bigger but it won't fit, might upgrade to a 40-45kg Ultra without rollbar)

Big Fortress hanging off the stern to kedge

Some sort of Hall type heavy fluked thing as a spare, looks like a danforth without the sides sticking out but weighs around as much as the rocna. Takes up no space on the bottom of one of the front lazarettes, and it came with the boat so I'm not about to replace or get rid of it

A 4kg Mantus on 5m chain+15m line for the dinghy. Overkill, sure, but it's a big little ship, and I'm not getting myself into an Adrift-style movie scene diving far from the boat.

Oh, and a big reel of shore tape. Not an anchor but is used like one so worth mentioning. And getting one if you don't have one already.
