Re: US Citizens, Long Stay Visa in France - have questions

The Great All Knowing YouTube Algorithm showed me a video a month or so ago that was interesting and scary.

A car with Belgium plates crossed the border into the Netherlands. There were at least...

Re: US Citizens, Long Stay Visa in France - have questions

Re: US Citizens, Long Stay Visa in France - have questions

The 50% penalty is the most horrible part of the law. If one transferred $100,000, say from a house sale, to an overseas account, and did not comply with FBAR, the Feds could take $50,000 out of the...

Re: US Citizens, Long Stay Visa in France - have questions

FBAR is very dangerous. Unless the law has changed, if one does comply with FBAR, the penalty can be 50% of the highest amount one had in an overseas account not what is currently in the account. ...

Re: US Citizens, Long Stay Visa in France - have questions

DockHead will be back to correct as needed. My understanding from reading these EU VAT discussions over the years is that VAT is due at the time of purchase by an EU resident of a boat that has not...

Re: US Citizens, Long Stay Visa in France - have questions

Just had a quick read on French residency. This is not a government website, which I would prefer, but they do seem to know the regulations/law,...

Re: US Citizens, Long Stay Visa in France - have questions

Will the year long stay trigger residency in France and thus having to pay French taxes? More concerning, will being a French resident trigger VAT on the boat?

We are thinking about a boat build...

Re: Warning to Fishers & Seafood Lovers

We bake our bacon since we can cook two pounds of bacon, if it is thick sliced, at one time. We then store the cooked bacon for usually a couple of weeks. The bacon does not go bad when cooked and...

Re: Cruising and Modern Conveniences- All is good with Universe

I read a magazine storty about a sail boat that had to fly a mechanic into Greenland because the engine failed. They sailed to a port but had to be towed in. Turned out to be a chaffed wire on the...

Re: Cruising and Modern Conveniences- All is good with Universe

Used to sail on my dad's boat in South East Florida and The Keys in the summer time. It was hot but I was acclimated to the heat and humidity. We always anchored, and while it was hot in the day and...

German Shepard's are misnamed....:whistling:

They really should be named German Shedders.

Tis bad enough collecting the German Shedders hair in a house :smile:, but in a boat...

Re: If you could establish residency anywhere....

I did not take it that Kettlewell meant meeting people but just not liking an area one has moved too. However, liking a place will involve people that is for sure. Not just social circles but the...

Re: If you could establish residency anywhere....

We have looked at Portugal but the Incentivised Tax Scheme (ITS) program is replacing the Non-Habitual Resident (NHR). The ITS seems to be undefined though it is in play this year. It seems the US...

Re: If you could establish residency anywhere....

Yep, as I mentioned up thread, Ireland does allow the tax free importation of goods when one gets residency or at least it did in the past. I found the law/regulation a few years ago but sure would...

Re: Lightening Strikes

The cone might prevent the boat from getting hit but, as you said, it is no guarantee that damage will be prevented. It might but it might not. It Is lightning.

We had a tree a hundred feet...

Land structures are protected against lightning and it works.

I think the ABYC and NFPA were/are working on updating lightning protection standards. Here is an ancient document from 1992,...

Re: Lightening Strikes

Get lightning protection for the boat.

I have seen lightning hit some structures but not others that were all the same height.

I have seen shorter trees hit by lightning while taller nearby...

Re: Why do cruisers quit cruising?

Yeah, get the heck out of at least South East Florida. As a native Floridian, I could not wait to get out of South East Florida. My grandparents moved to Florida after WWII. When they retired they...

Re: Diesel RPM?

Per the article,
Can't get the graph to post so one will have to look at the previously posted PDF to see the graph.

For the over propped prop, the load is higher but using less fuel.

Re: If you could establish residency anywhere....

I think you are correct that if one owns a boat, vehicle, goods, tools not used for business, etc, before getting residency, one can avoid taxes. The amount of time I have read is six months.

So,...

Re: If you could establish residency anywhere....

Yep.

And also realize that one will never be a "native" in the new place. Heck, that is true in many places, if one moves to a small town.

We met an American who had married an Irish woman...

Re: If you could establish residency anywhere....

One also has to take into account if one will have to pay tax on importing a boat into a country. The tax can be very expensive.

We have considered getting residency in a variety of countries but...
