Re: Why are helms placed so far back on modern yachts?

Tiller for.me whenever possible. Less to go wrong, less blocking up the cockpit (and please don't say how the cockpit is swept by the tiller, it is only when you tack or tube and your crew will be...

Re: Can I reef the genoa?

Re: Advice docking a boat with throttle mounted down low?

Re: Wire slapping in mast...

I used to work for a mast maker. What we always did building a mast was to pass down the mast a length of plastic water pipe, diameter according to what cables were to go in.

Stops all that...

Re: Are ignition keys pointless in the cockpit?

Most engine manufacturers build engines for vehicles so an ignition key is required. Most boatbuilders just get on and fit what they are supplied. Therefore we all get stuck with keys and it is only...

Re: Compass rebalancing for southern hemisphere

When I used to work for Sestrel compass manufacturers in a previous lifetime, I would have said a 4deg dip was liveable and probably less painful than doing a refill job! As others have said,...

Re: The great multi vs mono debate

Only if you are planning to visit Ninevah.

But I don't really feel taking the Mickey is the best way of dealing with a thread that all you folk clearly don't wish to participate in. I have my own...

Re: Repair or replace magnetic compass on Belize?

Re: Fixing A Leaky Compass

Please don't everything use alcohol unless you are 150% sure that is what was originally used. You will render the plastic dome opaque. Only actual glass is proof. maybe if you have a flat topped...

Re: Best dinghy for single handed sailor

Everyone has an opinion many are fixated on a particular type but please go back to first principles: what will you do with it? How much must it carry? How fast must it go? How well must it row? ...

Re: Recommend a Brass Lacquer

Back in the 1920s boat owners had this same problem with lamps and portlights and every sort of fitting. When I worked in the classic boat market we received calls every week from guys working on...

Re: Catalina 36 lazy jacks vs. "stack pack" options

[QUOTE=opusnz;2698557] The lazy jack systems were a pain in the a$$ when you wanted to put the mainsail cover on.

I have cleat each side on the mast at boom height. I have enough slack in my...

Re: Catalina 36 lazy jacks vs. "stack pack" options

Lazy jacks - easy DIY job, even easier if the mast is out sometime. I hung mine on the spreaders and you can do nearly everything without 'surgery' (depending on the make and type of boom you have)...

Re: Looking for Unusual Hinge

Looks like a hinge made by YS Fittings in UK back in the days when they were owned by Jack Holt. I looked at the Allen Brothers website (they manufactured and Holt's distributed) but a quick look...

I doubt the rigging is original because swayed ends like these were not in common use in the 1970s. (In Europe any way)

Re: Trailerable blue-ocean: exists?
