Re: SpaceX launching 60 Starlink Sats Tomorrow!

They are not competition for Iridium, period.

They may end up being competition for VSAT providers though.

Re: SpaceX launching 60 Starlink Sats Tomorrow!

You'd first have to understand Iridium's target market and network capabilities. As you're still trying to compare it to Ku and Ka band VSAT it's quite clear you do not possess such an understanding....

Re: SpaceX launching 60 Starlink Sats Tomorrow!

These nano Ku and Ka band satellites are not competition for Iridium. Entirely different markets with entirely different capabilities.

Never mind the fact that SpaceX is launching 60 satellites...

Re: Deciding on High Speed Internet System

FX is not competitive to standard VSAT service pricing, so not a good comparison at all.

The V7HTS is a 60cm antenna, fairly standard in the small vessel market for VSAT, although some networks...

Re: Deciding on High Speed Internet System

For the exact reasons I mentioned - you know EXACTLY what you're paying for, KVH won't disclose contention rations for a reason.. A true VSAT solution has no overages, no data caps, no "low speed...

Re: Deciding on High Speed Internet System

To add on this, I would suggest a certus/pilot/fleetone etc (L band terminal) in addition to your vsat no matter which direction you end up going, KVH or otherwise.

Not only is an L band backup...

Re: Deciding on High Speed Internet System

The "low speed channel" is exactly what I was referring to.

True VSAT has no overages, data caps, low speed channels, nor hidden contention ratios. As I said, KVH is very popular because of cost,...

Re: Deciding on High Speed Internet System

Hi Randy,

I cant speak for the new areas coming online, however, the other side to consider with KVH is the amount of data you're going to push every month.

KVH is extremely popular in the...

Shoe box satellites are not competition for Iridium in any fashion.

Re: Iridium Next close to completion...

Whoa, I can guarantee you the FleetOne hardware is nowhere near $6000, let alone Euro.

Now as for the difference between Iridium and Inmarsat, the Inmarsat antennas are only looking at one...

Re: Iridium Next close to completion...

Agreed, and aside from that Inmarsat will shut down a land BGAN SIM if consistent offshore traffic occurs.

You'll soon see the FBB150 completely discontinued and all small vessel focus shifted...

Re: Is BGAN the cheapest for Sat Internet?

I poated this in another thread, but Inmarsat are keen to keep their maritime business channeled through their maritime rate plans. While an Explorer 510 may work if you can keep it pointed on the...

Re: Iridium Next close to completion...

The isathub will give you the same troubles as a land bgan, geostationary satellite so any pitch/yaw/roll will make it very tough to maintain connectivity.

I'm not sure what part of the world...

Re: Iridium Next close to completion...

Just to add to that, a land BGAN would not only be tough to keep pointed while at sea, Inmarsat will also shut it down if they notice it logging into the network from offshore (and they will...

Re: Iridium Next close to completion...

It isnt meant to compete with KVH, KVH is Ku band VSAT solution and a poor one at that. There are plenty of great VSAT alternatives, Iridium Certus is competition for Inmarsat FBB... Nothing more....

Re: Iridium Next close to completion...

No, I have both.. neither terminal is operating at 700kbps currently and both will require a firmware upgrade to do so - but only after Iridium allows it.

Each terminal serves its purpose, the...

Re: Iridium handset choice, cradles, antennas, and installation

I would definitely recommend a docking station with fixed mast antenna installed to keep you out of the elements while you use the phone.

If you plan on using a 9575 for tracking as well you'll...

Also, just to clarify, the terminals available now are capable of 700kbps but that speed is not available as of today. Terminals are shipping with speeds up to 352kbps (been a bit higher in my...

Re: Beam Communications RST 100 Satcom

The RST100 is based off of a 9522B, which is an older but still commonly used transceiver.

Your system will work just as good as any Iridium phone (GO included, just minus wifi) for voice and...

Re: Iridium Go prices dropping

Iridium has not dropped the price, you're just seeing the retail market drive margins down over time.

The Next/Certus stuff is due out beginning of 2019 at the latest, however, it is more...

Re: Does anyone get the FCC license?

There may not be a need for FCC but most other countries are still regulated under ITU which is what drives the FCC requirements.

Re: Iridium Go extra services needed?

I work in the industry and can promise you there is no latency or voice quality difference between an Iridium phone and an Iridium GO. Both are no where near "cell phone" level quality and both have...

Re: Iridium Go extra services needed?

There is no noticeable latency on the wifi connection between the GO and your phone.. the latency there is a matter of single digit milliseconds, that number is minuet when you consider the latency...
