Stronger Arms for Women

I was about to give up on my upper body muscles when I discovered resistance training. The machines in the gym I visit are the Keiser brand and I don't know about others but I certainly recommend the concept. I believe there are also portable systems that rely on rubber bands. Unlike aerobics, resistance training is low-impact and there is no need to raise a sweat.

Re: Stronger arms for women

rowing and kayaking work just as well for less money and more readily available without having to go somewhere to get there to do it.LOl
i paddle at over 3 kts per hour. rimed by a soul in an island packet yacht heading into glorietta bay. that 3 kts is my cruising speed. i dont dawdle.
career in intensive care and emergency nursing is a great base for the strength, btw.

Re: Stronger arms for women

Paddling is great but the system I'm using has 7 or 8 different machines just for arm muscles. Another half dozen strengthen the back, front and legs. Every muscle group gets attention. Women boaters need different muscles depending on whether they paddle, row, pull up sails and so on. After a day of paddling you might, for example, need different muscles to hoist a canoe to the top of the van. I'm with you in wanting simplicity so I should explain that I can get to this gym on my bike and I don't have to change clothes or shoes to use these machines. PS. I also love spinach

Scrubbing the bilge and polishing the hull builds muscles. I'm sure hubby would be very good at coaching.

My wife likes to haul the anchor. Says it's a good workout. Though I recall once off Cliff Island in Maine we dropped the hook in about 80 feet and it was a l-o-n-g time coming up. . . .

Exactly. There was a study quoted (which I unfortunately can't link you to, as I saw it on a tv show), which said that strength training is far more effective at slowing the body's aging process than either running or swimming.

As for rowing, you'll build great muscle tone & endurance, but not much mass or absolute strength.

Re: Stronger arms for women

Endurance and physical strength are different things achieved in different ways. One person can lift weights 15 minutes a day and have more strength than someone who rows or runs three hours a day. On the other hand, that same person can have more endurance than someone who lifts weights.

I'm working on increasing my upper body strength. Love my kettleball! One piece of equipment- just one and portable!
