I've lived in Bali for 15 years now. All you need is some money. Worst case scenario $100.00 I would think. Have 1,000,000.00 IDR (rupiah) at the ready and just be as friendly as possible and if an issue arises, act dumb as hell, then ask "Can you help me" and pull out half the money, if that doesn't work, give up the rest, if that isn't enough, use your best acting skills and "tear up" a bit. This will do it.

Bali dogs are believed to be evil spirits who have returned to earth as dogs and when you get here and see them you'll know why. There has been an ongoing rabies problem here and billboards on the main highway about it (warnings). You'd be best to keep your dog away from any "Bali Dogs" but all the foreigners here have them.

My friend was here a couple years ago, drunk driving, going the wrong way down a one way, drove up on the sidewalk (3 am so no people around) and crashed into a pole, and passed out. Someone called the Po Po, they came, drove him home and he paid 500,000 to each cop. No ticket, no jail, no drunk tank, nothing. That's the way it works here. Unless drugs are involved, then your done.

You can get away with anything, you just need some cash. Don't worry about it, you should be fine.

Dogs as evil spirits? I thought the majority of Indonesia was Muslim and didn't believe in evil spirits. Which leaves the pagan minorities, and a number of them are said to consider dog as a special food fit for weddings and other big events.

How does that jibe with evil spirits? Who'd want to eat an evil spirit? UGH.

Never been to Indo (or Bali), but the locals having "pagan" beliefs and cultural norms outside of their stated religion not exactly unique.

Budhists in Thailand have lots of Animist things going on (I especially like the fertility stuff

). Christians in Europe have Xmas and Easter (and probably a few other things whose origins pre-date the religion and are still practiced by the locals)......no reason why the Muslims in Indo would be any different.

Bali is majority Hindu,and they have "temple dogs" and those Dogs made of concrete that scare off evil spirits in front of their homes,they also build a wall in front of their front door so that evil spirits cant enter because ghosts cant turn corners! Those damn monkeys are the evil spirits! I never ate a dog in Bali,Guam yes (once or twice),but not in Bali that I saw,maybe because of rabies?

Sunni Muslims, I believe consider dogs unclean.

Yup Astrid they sure are... drivers at my Dad's company used to dread coming to our house coz if one of the dogs jumped on them they'd have to go home, undress, purify/bathe then put on fresh clean clothes...
Dogs thought it was a great game...

I also think dogs for eating out there are bred... the pie-dogs would be like eating seagulls... wormy, tough and disgusting...
Now if you were talking monkey brains in Singapore...
