Given the time it probably wasn't botulism , but it sure felt that bad.
I've switched to cooking my own be4ans and pea soup from scratch. Rose Elliots book "The Bean Book "is a good source of info. Boy , does that ever make cruising cheap, a years supply for under $50.

Then there was a can of tomato sauce that exploded in the kitchen cabinet one night. Can linings have gotten better in the last decade or so, it used to be that a dented can could stretch the inner coating enough to disrupt it, so acidic contents like tomato sauce could react to the can itself. Apparently less so these days but mom's advice about not buying dented cans and not trusting the ones that bulge still holds. "When in doubt throw it out".

I still remember when I was a kid my father bought some blood from the Butcher to use for fishing, he kept it in the Garage in a big glass screw top Coffee Jar. And forgot about it. Until it EXPLODED. Yer can imagine what that smelt like and how long it took to clean up

My then Step Sister was a few years older than me and went to a "Posh" school (on a scholarship) and recounted to her class mates the story of teh exploding Blood.........whilst in our household keeping a couple of pints of animal's blood was not an entirely out of the ordinary event she learnt that in "polite society" that this was considered unusual family behaviour - whether exploded or not
