Forgive me, I am still very new to sailing and Im learning.

What about using iodine or chlorine to treat your water tanks and then make sure you have some charcoal and reverse osmosis filter system?

Even when buying a used boat im sure you cant trust what water is in the tank.

We used to use 1 Tablespoon chlorine to 10 gals. water to treat all our drinking water, then filter it out with a cheap charcoal filter, while traveling Mexico and the South Pacific, as far as the Solomon Is. System worked fine for years.

If you CF Google search on "weavis" with "sanitizing water systems" selected, he wrote an excellent description of how to sanitize the entire water system on a boat you don't know how bad it is.

You could use iodine, but would have to search out the iodine to water proportions.

If you have an r/o , that water is safe to drink, will not require filtering. Some people are concerned about the health sequelae of not having minerals in that water, and recommend a vitamin and mineral supplement, but I imagine increasing your mineral bearing foods would take care of it.

Always use a dedicated drinking water safe hose to fill your boat's potable water tanks. Keep it where nobody can borrow it to rinse their holding tank.

Always make sure you are using safe, clean (potable) water and let it run for a few minutes before filling the tanks.

Nothing wrong with sharing opinions based on experiences, right? So what if it took four pages.

I know it seemed obvious. However, it is a hot topic on the west coast these days and my friend disagreed with me, so I posted it here hoping to find a reference to a law.
When I have refilled water cruising the delta I never had an issue but my friend was adamant about not using it. So it struck me that maybe he was right that it was a new policy due to our drought (that is not being allowed to refill water tanks there even though it is a permitted cruising anchorage)?

Besides the usual reminder to be mindful of your water usage in the slip some new rules have been added at marinas regarding water usage. Such as, the last marina I was at now denies non liveaboards use of the laundry because of the drought. Seems unfair to me when it's a hot marina for cruisers who probably need to wash stuff and don't have a car!

We've been in marinas who deny the use of their washing machines to people who are not their customers, but even if you're transient in the marina, you're a paying guest and get access.

Sometimes, we've been able to get permission from places where people go camp, with or w/o trailers, to use those washing machines.

However, if the marina lets you take on water for your tanks, what is then to keep you from doing a little handwashing and letting it dry belowdecks? just the items you need to get by?

Hi Ann,

Yes we also do some small washing aboard and line dry. I just felt bad for our neighbors with a 65' ketch, no car only folding bikes, who needed to clean bedding and whatnot after a voyage and the marina says no. Lol, I just said I felt bad for someone with a 65' ketch!

Our home marina has 2 hoses on the fuel dock, one for washing out the holding tank and the other to fill the onboard water tank. Both are marked but I fill my tank from the water at my slip to be safe in case someone isn't paying attention.

I read that it is not a good idea to use these RV filters because they filter out the chlorine in the water. The chlorine that the city adds kills a lot of the germs and bacteria.
I added a whole house filter from Lowes to my system just after the pump and it works great. Use the carbon filters.

Otoh, if folks want to use those filters, subsequently Adding 1 teaspoon of bleach per 10 gallons is pretty trivial...
