Dispatching Fish with Alcohol

My teeth aren't in good enough shape anymore, so I use my knife.
I'm getting kind of old to be falling out of a tree and landing on the back of a deer, elk or bear for that matter, so nowadays I just stick em with an arrow. I still use my old Herters recurve that I've had for about 50 years!
When I was a kid, I used to lay on the bank next to a creek and scoop fish up with my hands. When it was a hot day, I'd sit in the creek facing the current and wait till they swam into me. Caught a gunny sack full one day and my grandma gave me hell for bring them back ungutted. I didn't have a knife! What was I supposed to do? Use my teeth?

This discussion was not about commercial fishing but rather how cruisers dispatch fish. I assume by your statement that you are a commercial fisherman. That is a completely different subject. Good luck and good sailing.

Use your teeth on fish, just bite out their C4 vertebre. They don't feel nuthin', and its fun as get out.

Then you can cut off their heads and gut their insides out with a pen knife.

I like to dry out the intestines and use em as spare shoestrings for my Sperry Topsiders.

Would have thought understanding how the pro's do it would be best practice for any cruiser improving their personal techniques.

I would seriously doubt that pro fishermen anywhere in the world use alcohol.

Yes, your assumption that I was a commercial fisherman is correct.
I also fish with a 100 year old split bamboo fly rod and use hand tied flys and gold Alcock hooks occasionally.
I'll bet most of you have never even heard of Alcock hooks!

For the average cruiser, killing a fish with alcohol is the safest, quickest (doesn't take much), cleanest way. In many places (Hawaii), commercial fishermen cannot sell a fish that has been cut open in any way. They don't club or alcohol them, just throw them in the fishbox which has plenty of ice, by the time they unload them they are good and dead.

You have got to be kidding me!
They actually buy fish with the guts still in them?
They actually buy fish that haven't been bled?
Remind me not to buy any fish caught in Hawaii!!!
Not having ever fished commercially in Hawaii, this might be true, depending on the type of fish. Fish that are primarily canned are usually filleted and the fillets are canned, so the need to gut the fish isn't necessary but they must be bled!
I've caught thousands of tuna over the years and you can be sure that they get bled before they are put on ice or frozen at sea. No cannery on the west coast would pay you a dime for fish not bled. Take my word for it!!

Somebody needs to go the docks in Hilo and see the tuna there! if you think a fish buyer from or for japan, would buy un-bled fish with the gills and guts in em, then things have really changed in the last 5 yrs !! Just my 2 cents

I have sport fished and commercial fished for many years and had never heard of trying to get a fish drunk so you can dispatch it. I am always willing to try something different. Exactly what is the proper etiquette for offering a 65 lb. halibut a drink? Do you start with a pick up line or go straight to the booze. They can be rather obnoxious when being tricked into your company under suspicious conditions. I guess I shouldn't use that harpoon anymore, that probably gives away my intentions immediately. Next time I will use a different approach, like" Hi Hal care for a drink." I am sure that will work.
