Bread Maker Aboard ?

My big Zojirushi bread machine is labeled at 700 watts, 120VAC which is a lot of power especially if it takes 3.5 hours to do its thing. Although a good portion of that time, the machine is sitting doing nothing as it waits for the dough to rise.
- - As to power, I run the genset to charge the batteries, make R.O. water and bake bread in the Zojirushi all at the same time. So the cost of the genset time is spread over many different requirements besides just making bread.
- - However, the "No-Knead" bread definitely sounds like a better solution with only the cost of propane for cooking.
- - 6.5 cups of whole wheat flour - Are you feeding a small army? I do know that fresh baked bread disappears way to rapidly compared to the store bought stuff. And the smell of fresh baking bread - - gosh, where is my butter knife and butter? I'm hungry just thinking about it.

What does that .35 KWH mean to a boat's electric system, do you know?

One caveat that we have discovered with our Panasonic bread machine. The cycle must be completed on whatever energy source started with. I do not understand why; but if we start it using the inverter and then later decide we want to turn on the generator, we cannot simply unplug the machine from the inverter outlet and plug into an outlet serviced by the generator. Somehow this bread machine knows it is plugged into a different power source and will not operate. It has a 2 minute power-loss feature so theoretically we should be able to change outlets. But it will not accept a change in energy source from generator to inverter or from inverter to generator. Both are supplying 240v at 50 hz, but the machine knows something is different and refuses to complete the cycle. Electricity gremlins?

I love my bread machine but if weight or space is a problem, and you have to choose between a bread machine and a grain mill (also a heavy, bulky item) get the mill. Regardless of how you make the bread, freshly milled grain makes a superior product. I also use my bread machine to mix dough and then shape buns, rolls, coffee cake or whatever to bake in the oven. It's great to make your own challah, hot dog buns, kuchen, etc. I once had a bread machine that also doubled as a rice steamer. Anyone know of other dual purpose machines worth having?

Milling your own grain is a pain in the ass. You can't argue with the results though. You'll never buy the worthless 'name brand' bread again. Ever.

?? KWH is thousands of watts per hour. 0.35 Kwh is 350 watts for one hour. If that is the total consumption of the machine from start to finish of making a loaf of bread then for a 220VAC machine you are looking at 32 amphours from a 12VDC battery/inverter. If the machine is 120VAC then about 29 amphours from a 12VDC battery/inverter.
- - But if that is the machine's power usage per hour, then given a 3 hour heat and mixing/kneading time that is 1050 watts total. The voltage requirement of the machine makes a slight difference.
- - If using a 220VAC machine that is approximately 4.8 amphours of AC power. If using an inverter on 12VDC batteries you are looking at about approximately 96 to 100 amphours out of the batteries.
- - If using 120VAC machine that is 8.75 amp hours of AC power. Again about approximately 90+ amphours of battery power.
- - So running that type machine strictly off the batteries through an inverter is rather expensive.
- - It is the long hours of running that makes running it off an inverter not very economical. Depending upon the cycle program you input into the machine the run/bake times can vary dramatically and likewise the power drain would vary significantly.
- - Running if off an operating engine high output alternator or shore power or a genset that is also being used for battery charging, watermaking, and other AC power hogs makes more sense.

to have a breadmaker on board i would have to buy a few more solar panels and a wind genny. and a bunch more batteries.......methinks i will continue to do it the old fashioned way.....

bash--canye make biscuits on stove top in a saucepan????? i do that when is too hot to turn on oven--
