What does the reference to "toxic contents" refer to? I thought the fuel had been off-loaded earlier during the salvage process, so the wreck should be relatively clean.

Relatively,it's not like a tanker with its potential spill but I wouldn't be surprised if there's residual lube oil in the engines, 1000 gal of bleach in laundry and 1000 gal of paint on board. I respect Scientific American but it sounds like they're being fairly dramatic about the situation. Not that there isn't quite a lot of risk in the operation.

Costa Concordia to be rolled upright next month. There will be a lot of news in September. Further details are here.

Well, to get the ship upright will finally show if all efforts will pay off. So far it was preparation and no one knows yet if all the previous work done is sufficient to get to the final result.
From October onwards the weather will be getting more and more unpredictable. I see some justification in waiting to haul the ship off the rock till conditions are favourable.

I will follow the salvage closely.

The National Civil Protection agency said attempts to right the "Costa Concordia" could begin as soon as September 16. The exact date for the operation will only be known the day before, since the final decision depends upon weather and sea conditions.

The tremendous costs and efforts for salvaging ships of the caliber of CC shows the extreme risks of operating such ships when things go wrong.

This time the operators were lucky that it happened just there, or, may be not because it would have been much better for all parties involved when the ship capsized in much deeper waters.
Then, however, the number of casualties among the pax would be tremendous - comparable to at least Titanic, assuming when this happened on open sea and far away from any shore.

I am curious what the countermeasurements of the international insurance coys will be to minimalise their risk.
