Also, a FP 43 or 42 capsized/ flipped in the med last year. Don't think anyone died. Interesting how the mags are too busy writing glossy articles about multihulls to cover the recent capsizes.

Richard Wood abandoned his Eclipse cat off Central America in the Pacific several years ago. Boat was found afloat and sitting on her lines a few months later near the Galapagos.
I was writing an article for a boating mag. here in the USA ,the editor told me to write about "people having fun". Mags. would lose advertisers if there was too much scary stuff.

Re: A List of Unsuccessful Bluewater Passages

I added some more boats to the list, Lady Domina and Grain de Soleil. See:
List of Unsuccessful Bluewater Sailing Passages
It's harder to find good information on the boats from non-English speaking countries.Their was a third boat missing in the same North Atlantic storm, "Team de Shock", I think. Can anyone point to good information on that boat?

Re: A List of Unsuccessful Bluewater Passages

I just added an interesting account from my home state of Queensland of a boat that completed a South Pacific passage under some duress, made it to the entrance but was unable to successfully get through the inlet safely. Thanks so much to the owner/skipper for his brave and honest accounting. See the story of "Tere Hau Nui".

How about the Kaz II, which was found drifting off of Queensland, in April 2007. Called the Ghost Ship in the press. Link here http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaz_II

Re: A List of Unsuccessful Bluewater Passages

No one can say what caused the explosion that killed these people, but more than likely it was gas that leaked from somewhere. This tends to confirm my opinion that no one should have a gas system without a shut off valve at the tank. this depends on electrons that are notorisly unreliable in a salt atmosphere. The other half of this gas system is that no one that does more than 2 or 3 day passages should be without the fittings and tools to bypass the gas solinoid if your whole electrical system fails. That's what happens when you start talking about electronics failing.

OK, I dug up a news story on this one. Wow. The guy was Australian, of Columbian descent, gave up in the middle of he Pacific ocean because he got too tired after his autopilot failed. See "Folly II".

Can anyone identify the make and model of "Sea Wanderer"? There is a good picture of the boat here:

Re: A List of Unsuccessful Bluewater Passages

The Bundaberg Cruising Yacht club had 84 Sailing yachts registered in the 2011 Port to Port Yacht Rally,

That was 84 yachts coming into Australia from Fiji, Vanuatu and New Caledonia over a 2 month period, No Sinkings, But an 80 million drug bust, Hahaha

When you compare the amount of sailing cruising yachts out there, Currently cruising, World Wide,

The amount of actual Sinkings Fades into insignificance,
