RawFaith is a 118 foot long, three-masted, 300 ton tall ship (without cannons). RawFaith had been the target of criticism for her apparent lack of seaworthiness. One of the crew was struck in the head by a piece of the falling mast, but not seriously injured. RawFaith was rescued by the Coast Guard cutter Seneca about 50 miles off Mt. Desert Rock and was again towed to Rockland for repairs.
RawFaith was bound for Bermuda, having left Salem, Mass., on Dec. 4, and was "probably undermanned".

It is really sad that he lost his dream. But my sympathy is a bit lessened by the fact that (at least if the article is accurate) he was extremely ill-prepared for this journey, and endangered many lives in the process. Look at the effort put forth by the Coast Guard. I can only imagine the monetary expenditure. The Captain had a beautifully altruistic dream but his vision and ability to carry it out was obviously askew.

Imagine jumping from a perfectly good helicopter into the open ocean - big waves, cold water, and 175nm from land... Rescue crews live for those moments, but the risks are real.

At the risk of sounding sanctimonious, this incident reminds us that we need to take reasonable precautions so we don't unnecessarily endanger the lives of others.

In different parts of various reports (and even Raw Faith's own website), the vessel's LOA is given alternately as 88' and 118'. I assume it has to do with including or not including the bowsprit (convention is not to include it - otherwise, my boat is 40' insead of 37').

It seems the fellow had a wonderful idea but not the sense to know he needed advice to accomplish it. It's telling that the CG suggests a different person might not have taken that boat into the NA in winter.

Sometimes we hear of people who succeeded at something despite everyone telling them they couldn't but I don't think that means shear determination can accomplish what wisdom suggests we don't try. Taking a boat that isn't sea worthy into dangerous waters is not something that raw faith should be applied to.
