Yes, that's a good idea. Get upside down in a Sunfish and then a Hobie 14 and compare the two. They're the same length. Sunfish is a monohull and Hobie is a catamaran. You'll have fun on both and get a real up close and personal comparison of mono with catamaran.

Sailing small vessels is, IMO, the best way to learn how. If you can handle a Hobie screaming from wave top to wave top and how to turtle the sunfish and bring her back in one swift move you have nailed it. We used to practice docking a Flying Scot with the center board up just to show off.

That was easy enough as a kid. We don't have as much time as adults to work our way up from open cockpit day sailor to a blue water cruiser. Get your feet wet on mono and cat hulls and go from there.

That place takes me back. I spent a good part of my youth fishing for perch & pike in a $20 vinyl dinghy on Chestermere Lake. You wouldn't want a deep keel there from what I remember.

Us locals call it Chesterslew. It's ok for small craft and boogy boards but certainly not a place for a deep keel. I've seen 12' and 14' sailboats on it, but I think most of those have a 2' or 3' keel. I'm greedy. I want 25' to 30' sailboat and you ain't gettin that in the slew. My sailing lessons are at the Glenmore Res in Calgary which is much deeper.

I can see where this thread is heading. Don't you know that you don't know anything about sailing until you have sailed a dingy in gale force winds and monster swells? If so I don't know anything about sailing either. Keep your dreams and have fun learning. And don't be surprised if your ideal boat changes a lot in the next couple of years as mentioned.
