So here we are in Cape Breton in a beautiful place, cheap berth and trying to earn some much needed cash and wondering whether we should move down to Halifax before the winter sets in, not looking forward to another freezing winter. Two winters living aboard in Newfoundland should be enough for anybody!

Pretty as it is in NS, in a real bad winter the sea will freeze so I would deff head south.

Go due south from Halifax harbour and you'll hit waaaarm Bermuda in 700 or so miles. Welcome.

As a fellow Scot, located way further south.... my advise is point the sharp end towards me and get as far away from your present (very beautiful location) to warmer climes...or stock up your preferred whisky... and make tons of stovies( I have and excellent recipe should you need it).

This journey started in Philadelphia in 2007 and began as a quick trip solo across the North Atlantic to sell the boat, return to the States and buy another, however I was becalmed on the George Bank for 6 weeks with a broken down engine and then hit by a hurricane on the Grand Banks (4 days of 60ft waves about 10 miles from the spot where the Andrea Gail was lost in 'the perfect storm' ) towed into Newfoundland by the coastguard with shredded sails, broken rigging, dead engine, waterlogged instruments, starving as I had run out of food and only $30 in the world.
Canadian government refused my application for a temporary work permit, so I had to rely on the local people to help me. took me 20 months to get the money together for the repairs. however I met my new wife to be there and we have now decided to sail around the world rather than sell this boat.
I need to get somewhere where I can earn some reasonable money...I am a boat builder and specialise in fibreglass and wood repairs etc

halifax harbor doesn't freeze but damn it will be cold, i am in dartmouth, and you may get on with a contractor for cash, as you have no work permit, the missus will for sure get a job waitress or bar tending, and they all do well on tips here. I will also have a place for rent in oct / november, downtown dartmouth, if you need that, will be a reasonable rate and all bus routes, will have much better luck in halifax than cape breton, not much work there, you may even get some work at the clubs or rigging places, feel free to contact me

Your adventure sounds a bit too energetic for me, but I still think Newfoundland qualifies as a destinaion I'd be interested in. I have made many cruises to Nova Scotia, but none so far to Newfoundland. Would it be possible for me to pick your brain (perhaps in e-mail) about the time you have spent there? I'm happily married and don't need any advice in that area just now, but learning about your actual experiences would be very helpful.

Hi!

Newfoundland is a beautiful province and well worth visiting, especially in June when the ice bergs are off the coast and the whales are feeding on the caplin. The people are one of the friendliest I ever come across! Very proud of their Irish ancestry and their music is much still Irish based.
I was so impressed with the Newfoundlanders, I am taking one along with me now as a souvenir! Her name is Trish, so I am okay on the marriage bit now thanks!

Hi Snap.
Enjoy NS and NF while you're here, but, like most posters here seem to thing (and I agree).... head south .... if I could convince my wife, that's where I'll be heading.
I have been south and north, ......in the middle somewhere is the best.... preferably no more than 20 deg. north or south.
