Aloha and welcome aboard!
I was going to say that a good diesel engine is the most expensive addition to a boat but someone already beat me to it.
There is a book title mentioned after my signature and a couple of links that you might be interested in trying. The search engine linked there is a google search that might help you answer specific questions.
Even if you are extremely handy in all things there are some boats that you should avoid so before taking the plunge post here in one of the other threads which boat you are about ready to put money into and you'll hear from others on the forum who either have owned the boat or who have had experinces aboard them.
Good luck in your search. The searching part can be a whole lot of fun and if I were to do it again I'd buy a boat in sailing condition that just needs some updates and cleaning up and a small repair or two. I've spent way too long rebuilding a boat and I'd rather be sailing.
Diesel is the preferred auxiliary engine.

I've taken a look at a half dozen boats so far, but they've all been in more rough condition than I'm willing to dive into. I'm headed to the library on Friday to grab a few books and start reading

Good move on looking hands on, see in reality what you learn from others / books / internetland.

Free learning from someone else's problems is always good

Welcome and just one word of advice from someone who has been sailing over 40 years and built his last two boats.. Just do it but you need to throw out the plan. Cruising has a way of slowing everything down

Duly noted. The 'plan' is more like a to-do list with wobbly time estimates attached to them.

I'm taking a bit of time off on the active hunt, I need to replace the engine in my car this week, so I have a pretty busy period coming up.

I did a course in the military and one of the first comments the instructors said was: "A plan is a list of stuff that just isn't going to happen". Mainly because once things start happening, you end up reacting to what's going on. A plan is more of a general guideline without any requirement to strictly follow.
