Philadelphia area

Sailed as a child now 20 ish years later have the itch.
Few options buy a day sailor to sail in lake nockamixon or buy something larger to keep in marina in Philly.

Leaning towards something in the 35-40 foot range to sail more and reach my end goal of long distance retirement sailing in many years Also like the idea of Philly being about 45 minutes away so will spend weekends on the boat and hopefully have more guests and room for them to stay on hoard.

Any suggestions on marinas? Or a boat to look at? Like to stay in the 40-70k range. This won't be the boat for ever just like a good well equipped boat that will last and not fall apart lol

Any boat or brand recommendations? More of a power boater in the past.

I don't hear a lot of good stuff about Philly marinas. We are in Delaware City, about 50 minsutes South. It's OK here. Gives you access to the upper Chesapeake via the canal.

50 minutes south of philly? I am 45 minutes north or philly so be like two hour drive.

Pity. I guess there is more for a power boater to do north of Philly. And elsewhere I know of a lady with a 30' Columbia who sails around there. But she just put that up for sale.

There are some options on the NJ side. dredge Harbor and a small marina on the Rancocas in Delanco.

Join Active Captain. It's free. You can see the location of every marina in your area and read reviews, rates, amenities, etc. Each marina's website is also listed. Pick out a few that seem to meet your requirements and visit them in person.

It takes a fair bit of experience to know which production boats are of a higher quality and which ones to avoid. It would be best for you to join a club and get some of that experience.
Walk the docks and see what appeals to you then come back on the forum an ask about a particular boat. When new to sailing stay away from custom boats or a boat that has been greatly modified as you gain experience you may want to sell what you have and those will not fetch a good price.

I'm a full time live aboard in Philly at Pier 3 marina.. there are 3 marinas in town, Piers 3 & 5, and next to Dave and Busters is the Philly Marine Center. We're full for the winter plus - until they start dredging, half the marina dries out at low tide, supposedly their going to start dredging this month.

So it's not a marina if you want to go in and out a lot. But perfect location in Philly. The marine Center is larger, has fuel is a good marina and is dredged.

There are also 3 large marinas up at Dredge Harbour - just north of the Betsy Ross Bridge on the New Jersey side. Their also -depending on what your draft is - you may not get in to the harbour at low tide- I didn't and draw 5'. Once inside there's plenty of water. Any more questions let me know.
