We helped our friends gain confidence sailing their new to them W32 last night out of
New York. The initial forecasts were for 15-20kts out of the south, but it ended up being much less with periods of no
wind at all.
The
shipping lanes can be tricky at night, picking up the buoys and using only paper
charts, plotting
GPS coordinates and hand bearing
compass, especially if the
wind is fluky.
My son Luke is the star of the video I made for youtube, he has several
New York -
Key West and back, trips under his belt with us, and his young eyes very helpful. I know, no matter what, I can put him on the
helm, and he'll keep a course, by sight or
compass, allowing me to deal with whatever needs to be done.
In the end it was a nice trip, our friends had fun, we got to see some early fireworks, and had an awesome freshwater
shower just as we tied up. Enjoy the video. [URL="
