Newbie Sailor in Oceanside, CA

Greetings,
Hope to be sailing the coast of California soon as my wife and I are joining a friend in ownership of his Catalina 27 in Oceanside Harbor. I won't pretend to be more than a newbie since most of my skippering experience has been sabot and Hobie class--not counting my kayak.

We plan to take classes and learn as much as we can and only stay within our abilities--which at this point today probably limits us to sitting on the boat in the slip! Fortunately, our friend is experienced both with sailing and with boat maintenance, so he'll mentor us into the joys and responsibilities of sailing and caring for the boat. For now, no long-range cruising plans--but maybe Catalina in a few months--we're divers as well and enjoy that destination.

Looking forward to meeting some of you good folk online or on the water and learning at the feet of experts.

Re: Newbie Sailor in Oceanside, CA

I used to live up in North County and spent a lot of time in Oceanside harbor myself. My friend was in the yacht club as a junior so that's actually where I first learned how to sail. If you're taking any ASA classes a place I work at teaches them and if I do say so myself we have pretty good instructors. I think putting the link in here would qualify as a commercial advertisement, so send me a pm if you're interested and I'll send you the info.

And I'm sure there's some good stuff up in Oceanside as well just to make the drive easier. We have a cool class that does coastal nav planning, anchoring, and all that jazz from San Diego to Mission Bay.

I dive as well; the two go really well together.

I grew up on the Oceanside Yacht Club. Taught sailing many summers. Raced on Sundays. Great times.
