New member coming in

Please allow me to introdce ourselves; Randy and Cindy. We are in process of purchasing our next home, a Pearson 424. We will close on the boat in the spring (it's on the hard in RI right now), and bring it up the canal to lake Erie for an extended refit. We have just sold our previous boat, a Santana 30, which we have sailed on lake Erie for the last 8 years. Obviously, this is a serious upgrade for us. We plan to toss off lines in June 2017 and between now and then hope to learn a few things from you folks here. Anyway, just wanted to say hello. By the way, I'm trying on the name, ey frija, for the new boat name. Frija is the norse goddess of love and beauty for whom the day of the week, Friday is named. Ey is norse for always, and so a kind of pun, always friday and forever love; what do you think?

Welcome! Sounds like you have very good solid plans and should have fun.
Freya might be a great protective spirit for a boat, but the one tricky part of the name might perhaps seem to be if people try to connect it to the departing port on Friday superstition.... don't know if people would do that or not. Don't know Norse for "always Friday except for the day we leave port."

Re: New member coming in

Hi Randy and Cindy and welcome to the forum.

You have picked a really nice boat. The 424 is almost as nice as the 422.

In case you haven't found it already, there is an active Pearson 424 owners group on the net, Sailing Pearson 424 | Information for Pearson 424 owners and fans Great place for information, meet other owners, find out about any little quirks and foibles, little details that might need fixing.

One thing I have seen on several Pearsons including mine is an issue with the mast step. Many of the 424s and 422s used a steel mast step on the keel IE in the bilge and over time the aluminum in the steel set up a galvanic reaction and ate away the aluminum at the bottom of the mast. Not a horribly difficult fix but should be addressed if you have that problem. Definitely worth taking a look at that area.
