Hello and welcome. As you've probably already seen there's lots of good info on this forum and many very knowledgeable & helpful folks. Where are you located?

Re: Looking for Union Polaris 36 owners

Hi Kipp and Shelly,

My girlfriend and I bought a 1976 Union 36 Hull #4 in the fall and have been fixing her up ALL winter long. What turned into a small project turned into an epic. I know what you mean about emotional support. You can read about our progress here: Leela | The Highs, Lows, and Kisses in Between
We are leaving on June 1st for 4 months sailing in the Pacific Northwest, then will need to work for the winter and then hopefully take off on a more extended journey in Spring 2016. Where are you guys located? Please PM me and let's exchange emails as I'd love to know more about your boat and plans. Cheers
Emmanuel

Re: Looking for Union Polaris 36 owners

Hey Kipp and Shelly
My wife and I are looking at a Union 36 that will need a new mast. Would you mind sharing a ballpark on what your new mast and rigging costs were to help us with our decision?

Thanks
Mark

Re: Looking for Union Polaris 36 owners

Hey

I have bought a HC 36 (UNION 36) the last month in Cadiz called Hobbit II. I am very happy with her, she has a lot of work of the maintenance, because she was in the dock for one year.

Cheers.

Re: Looking for Union Polaris 36 owners

Hey All,

I'm very impressed with the refit work being done.

Found Leela blog pages. Great project documentation. Added some info.

How are the rest of your projects coming?

Are there any other blog pages or sites documenting Union 36 projects & restorations? Am on several forums, but so far the blog has been the best.

Anyone have the link for the site that posted tank measurements?

I'm interested as I'm trying to sort possible restoration of one, although these boats are not new to me. Sailed them on SF Bay, and up and down the coast. Still very helpful to see what solutions others have chosen, and how implemented.

By the way, I think it's well worth it, as the boat sails very balanced, and the hull is extremely stout. Was asked to captain someone's 50 ft something vessel once, I said no thanks after seeing the hull flex.

Hull layup schedules are rarely done as thick as these were. Understand some have had to deal with blisters, fortunately new technology makes that easier. We caught epoxy barrier coat blisters, and on the grind down found mold release still. Kept going, went into laminate, exposed any voids & faired back up with epoxy fairing putty, then 5 coats barrier coat, and has held up well.

Appreciate the nuggets you've shared, and happy to do same, if there's anything I can add.

Happy Sailing
