Hello, Im from NYC area Im in the Jamaica bay area just wiped out from Hurricane Sandy, just recently lost my home, a 1969 43' Egg Harbor w/ 6-71N Detroit's where it currently is resting at the bottom of my slip waiting for me to get all my ducks in a row to raise.
However my joining this forum is to find a place to semi retire to in warmer climate south of DC and north of fla. Ive heard of places in NC and SC where livaboard communities kind of like the Villages in Fla but designed around livaboards can be found. Thats kinda what Im looking for. Ive been a residential contractor all my life and enjoy restoring boats so as a semi retirement thing Id like to be able to include this as a way to continue an income. So, A quiet place yet not so far from civilization, a picturesque boating community, Thats my story and Im ticking to it !!

I live in Oriental, NC. There isn't a liveaboard community as such, but most marinas don't prohibit liveaboards, although some charge a LA fee. Live aboard slips for a 40'er will cost $3-400/mo, sometimes with and sometimes without utilities.

Oriental is a large boating community with three times as many boats as residents, two boatyards and lots of independent contractors working in the area. Port Supply makes a run to the small West Marine store and surrounding yards weekly.

Transportation beyond can be difficult. It is a 45 minute drive to a small regional airport in New Bern that flys to Atlanta and Charlotte. That gets us everywhere we want to go. Raleigh is another two hours away.

The climate is tough in the summer- 85-95 and humid in July and August, decent in the winter- lows in the 30s and highs in the 50s in Jan and Feb. And in between it is delightful.

Services are cheap compared to other places suggested such as Charleston, although medical care is more expensive than average IMO and you have to go to New Bern for almost everything.

Hi.. Welcome to CF...
I liked New Bern as a live aboard option but ended up in Oriental which I enjoyed hugely... Rarely needed anything from outside the village... apart from Liquer and the Library....
I would add Beaufort NC to your list of choices... a sleepy town with the hustle of Morehead City across the river when you want a change... spent a winter on the hook there... cold... but the Back Street Pub had Guinness and a blazing log fire for warm evenings and numb nights...
