Clueless Sister-in-law Needs Help!

I'm 6ft 1 inch, weigh 185 lbs and use an XL. I generally buy either Musto or Harken. Both are good, both look nice.

If your husband wants to "look like a sailor" get him some of the ones with a "cool" look. On the other hand, if he wants real sailors to think he's a sailor, buy him the ones that don't necessarily look "cool" but look like they do what they are supposed to do - protect your hands.

I wear a pair out every year. The old pair goes down below for use by a visitor if any of them are no inclined.

Go to HomeDepot and buy a pair or two of the fabric work gloves and cut off the fingers...

REAL sailors don't need or want NAME brand.

Haha! Yes it's and IU alumni camp! We don't tell ghost stories, but there is a campfire and you do get smores. It's a family camp so the girls are already there

'Hand' size is related to 'foot' size.. ;^}

XL is a good bet. Seriously, for a week of sailing, you don't need to buy the kind of glove some of us use all the time. But when you wear gloves 24/7 (not off watch) for 200 days out of the year, comfort and durability are important. 3/4 fingers will be perfect for their type of sailing

If you actually visit the WM store they can exchange them if they find XL too big but I'm guessing they will be OK.

I just noticed that you did mention where you live.

If you can't find an outlet that has sailing gloves and want to do a reasonable job in finding some my last pair has given me good service for several years and I got them at Home Depot. Of course, they don't call them sailing gloves but they have 3/4 fingers and work great for sailing. Even look good in red and black. Hope they still have them in stock. Check their catalog. Search Results for*fingerless work gloves*at The Home Depot

Okay guys - you have been super helpful! I think I have narrowed it down to the following 2 pairs:

Gill 3/4 Finger Pro Racers

and

Harken 2083 Reflex Gloves, Short Finger

The Gills seem to be tried and true - all the reviewers love them. The Harkens are new, but a lot of people seem to like the old pairs - I haven't been able to find any reviews of the new kind though.

The Harkens are a bit cheaper.

As far as these 2 go - the Gills have the Proton-Ultra and DuraGrip and the Harkens have the Black Magic grip. I've also read the Amara leather is good in sailing gloves. Any advice?

By reviews alone I would go with the Gills but that's not really fair to the new Harkens that just haven't been on the market long.

You are not going to figure out correct sizing, and styles they want. Get everyone a hat with the lake or state park emblem on it. Sun out of eyes, is just as important as gloves, and hats are adjustable.

I think those who sail less often need gloves more than those who sail more often. This kind woman is looking to buy her men a gift. Let's tell her about the gloves we would like.

I like mine from Home Depot but that's because I'm cheap and I know they are as good but she's not wanting to be cheap so I'd go with her choice of Gills.

And for the boneheads in the peanut gallery, if you have nothing nice to say butt out. Jeez. Merry effing Christmas. Hope Santa brings you a lump of coal.

BTW - it's not just the gloves or the hat. She found this place, logged in two months early, put up with the peanut gallery, did some research and is gonna get them a thoughtful gift. I hope someone is putting that kind of effort into a gift for me.

OP oughta print this thread out and include it with the gift to show the gauntlet she ran for the love of her men...

Those particular Gill gloves are the bomb! Last forever and the little tabs on the finger ends allow easier removal when wet. They will love them!! Sweet as~
