Why does she not get hypothermia?

Awesome pictures, and neat story (swimming naked with beluga's in the Arctic), but I question that her yoga techniques really allow her to be in that water for 10 minutes?

Thoughts?

Here is one of the pics.

Re: Why does she not get hypothermia?

I saw a docu on TV last week showing a guy swiming in the sea full of ice and he was in for over 15 mins and showed no sign of stress or hypothermia

Its partly about conditioning the body and partly to do with ones mental ability to override the bodies natural defences

Its all part of adapting to different environments. Pearl fishermen can hold breath for longer and re focus eyes to see without goggles. Some people can take a lot of crap whilst others flip.

People who practice Yoga can slow their hearts right down and others meditate away pain to let them stick spikes through body parts.

Yeah, Photoshop was my first thought, and then I looked at this picture from the story. If it was 'shopped, then they did an incredible job on the reflections of both her body partially out of the water, and the beluga's.

I tend to believe these pictures, but I still question the veracity of the story.

Re: Why does she not get hypothermia?

Jump in, take the photos, come back up and towel off, warm up (you can see the towel and warming gear in the guy's hands. There are people who can swim in some seriously cold conditions but thermodynamics will always win. I forget the ratio but I think water strips heat away something like 20x-50x faster than air. I do a lot of scuba diving and even in the 85 degree pool you'll get hypothermia if you stay in there long enough.

Re: Why does she not get hypothermia?

As some one just said:

"the last thing I would want to do is jump in the arctic ocean for 10 minutes, then jump back out to the snickers of 3 women scientists.... I'd be inverted!"

Oh gosh, buddies of mine just have the worst sense of ha ha! The inevitable shrinky d*nk comment had to be made!

Re: Why does she not get hypothermia?

The Daily Fail is not a newspaper of record, so even if this is true, I am not disposed to believe it.

I have not heard that any kind of yoga (developed in notably warm climates) is helpful in any kind of Jedi mind trick Arctic swimming. The only culture I know of that trains to ignore icy water are certain sects of Tibetan Buddhist monks who sit under glacier waterfalls.

Which explains why there aren't a lot of Tibetan Buddhist monks, really.

If it is true, it's pretty interesting, however, but I prefer the Occam-like decision that the Mail is just finding a quasi-legitimate reason to run a picture of a naked woman "for science".

We talked about this, and actually the inevitable jokes were made that Russians like their vodka which serves as antifreeze (not true!), but the serious suggestion was made that many long distance swimmers coat themselves with grease to fend off hypothermia, and that she probably did also.

Note the guy in the back when she is on the ice with a towel and what looks like it may be a heater at his feet.

Women handle immersion in water better than men. Women have an extra layer of fat that acts as insulation. Also makes them soft and cuddly. That's the reason women have been pearl divers in cold water areas before wetsuits were available.

Re: Why does she not get hypothermia?

I did have quite a close look at one of those photos and it does appear that the subject - not the Belugas - was a little chilly.
