Russia has a tough policy against hostage takers as displayed by several incidents with Chechens (the biggest was a whole theatre, 200+ people, taken hostage; the gov't, instead of negotiating, successfully attacked... with some casualties). I guess they're using a similar approach with Somalian hostage takers.

It's interesting that Somalian government approved Russian Navy actions.
Succesfully attacked? If I remember correctly, they pumped the building full of "knock out gas" which was unfortunately much too strong, resulting in the deaths of many of the hostages. It was almost as botched as Beslan...
If you read "Blowing up Russia" by Alexander Litvinenko, the unfortunate fellow the Russian's poisoned with Pulonium 210, he says this incident was staged by FSB as a casus belli, and that is why the "terrorists" were "accidently" killed by gas that was too strong. Because they were actually FSB agents who knew too much. The fact that they killed him for writing this says a lot...

What a waste of ordinance. If you want to blow up a rink think piece of sh* vessel, why waste millions of rubles?

That film was a media event.
A small shaped charge in the bilge would have sunk the boat.

I don't know what was more irritating, the music or the repetitious editing.

Have you seen the earlier video of the russions capturing a pirate mothership, tieing the occupants to it and sinking it? Brings a tear to your eye doesnt it!

Very irritating. I couldn't get it to stop. Plus, Adobe Flash kept wanting to store info on my computer and wouldn't click off when I kept denying. I think this video should be deleted from the site.

Re: Video of Russian Warship Ripping Up a Somali Pirate Vessel

My understanding is the Russians warned the kidnappers and thiefs what they would do if they were caught. If I were sailing in those waters I would fly a Rusian flag and would probably be left aloan by kidnappers and thiefs. Good ridnance to kidnappers and thiefs sent to Davie Jones Locker

Not my area of expertise but they seemed to be staying out of range of any likely Somali weapons (and when the Russkies fired the RPG they were a lot closer).......could be that they were initially training on only hitting part of the vessel, hence most went wide. IMO would not take much damage to either convince the Somalis to surrender or to render the pirate vessel inoperable........pot luck for any hostages, but that's what you get for messing around in pirate waters. Personally I would settle on those chances afloat, rather than take my chances ashore in Somalia. YMMV.

My bet is that anything big, with guns and a russian flag gets taken very seriously........for a UK warship the Somalis would he working out how to get a council house

Re: Video of Russian Warship Ripping Up a Somali Pirate Vessel

Its worth doing a google and see what comes up
Russian Warship shoots Somali Pirate Vessel - Google Search

All sorts of stories appear including this one from the Somalia Press
Not that I'd necessarily believe it

Quote:
SOMALIA: Russia executed all Somali pirates – spokesman

BOSASSO — A pirate spokesman, who wished to remain anonymous, contacted Somalilandpress today said at least ten of his men were executed by the Russian navy after the troopers stormed MV Moscow University.

“The Russians commandos stormed the ship before sunrise, starting a firefight with our men, onboard they injured three of them and one was killed,” he said.

He dismissed the Russian navy statement that the men were released because of “the absence of a legal base to carry out prosecution procedures against pirates”.

“The Russians never released the young men instead they shot them point-blank range then loaded their lifeless bodies back on the boat,” he added.

Practice? Shoot at this target or another later in some meaningless training excercise...
