Here are a few photos for you all to enjoy. They are of the USCG training in breaking waves recently in CA. My crew gave me these. Her friends were the ones on the boat. VERY impressive.

How the hell do they all stay on?? Are they strapped in or something? Sheesh, if I was on that, they'd have to nail both feet to the deck if they expected me to stay at the helm for that.
Can you just inagine what must run through your mind and right out your mouth as you are about to hit those breakers.

I think those shots are from a bit of video I've seen and I can only say to things - Spooky and lucky puppies.

Most of the business patrol boat things I've been on the crew are strapped in. Our new Auckland Police boat has seat belts. And what's more full leather interior, can't have the lads ruffing it I suppose.

IIRC those were taken at "Cape Disappointment" MLB school. They're 47' Motor Life Boats that the US and Cdn Coast Guards use. Incredible boats. I think I've posted pics of them here before. IIRC the US guys have to take 3 knockdowns in the 47 footers before they graduate!

I thought it looked like Cape Disappointment. I'm about 10 miles from there right now in Astoria OR. They have anice museum in Astoria that shows the history of the CG rescue boats from the original boats purchased from England that had oars thru to the new 47' boats. Also there is the retired 44' (I think ) boat.

BTW Had a nice visit with the CG yesterday. Failed my safety test with three problems 1) outdated navigation rules 2) no ships bell (I know I have one but I have been tearing the boat apart to fix a leak and can't find it 3) my registry papers and they let me slide on not having a lock on the waste valve. I'll put one in today.

Invited or uninvited inspection? Friendly?

Do they use a checklist like the ones we use to try to make sure that we are ready for them? I have a friend who instructs and is a USCG CPT ---- when she gets inspected, she goes below, pulls out the clipboard with the inspection sheet on it, and leads them around the boat pointing out compliance. She says they rarely finish.....
