This post from another thread brings to mind how differently we live when we're cruising from when we live ashore. Ashore we shower in the mornings, a throwback to the days when we used to have to go to work. But when we're cruising we always shower in the late afternoon. Especially at anchor, shower, sundowners, dinner, bed. Usually all done before nine p.m.

I shower at both times, and even while cruising. The morning shower is a wake up call, and you already described the evening shower.

Swim in the am, sail or work on the boat in the morning, lunch around 2 or 3, play in the afternoon, shower in late afternoon, nap, sundowner, dinner around 9 red wine until when ever.

well, yes but thats not really a shower just a bucket of fresh water thrown on you by the crew as you climb on to the boat,

I'm with Vasco. I do prefer a second sun downer just to make sure it stays down.

I always thought the second sundowner was to make sure it came up again in the morning, luckily I always have the second sundowner, and so far ( I do hate to generalise) the sun always seems to be there the next day. And so we have warm water for the next days shower.

I always shower in the morning, but in warmer weather and if ive either worked up a sweat or got dirty during the day, i shower when i get home in the evening too.

The morning shower is vital and i cant feel clean without one. I feel as though something vital is missing otherwise

Off shore showers can be a bit few and far between especially if weather is bad. I have very long thick hair and one question always arose from the captain when seeking a crew position aboard his/her boat is "do you have to shower everyday?" I pride myself in being able to take a shower with about 2 cups of water. Now I know some are skeptical, but take a salt water bath and rinse with fresh (recycle the fresh as you rinse). I feel fresh as a daisy, captain is happy cause the blonde isn't using up all his water reservers.

On some of the big boats it wasn't an issue, though I still washed with salt and rinsed with fresh. At anchor my favorite time to shower is in the evening, then I sit in my hammock and let the breeze blow dry el natural. funny how talking about showering can make ya "home sick" for the cruising life.

Funny how you can identify every harbor/ marina by the quality of the shower facilities!!!

After a few weeks out doing the salt water swims and fresh water rinse, it is still nice to get into a nice shower and give yourself a nice soak. My Crews grade each location by the quality of the view and quality of the shower.... often the shower quality will out place the view at least for a day or so.

To answer the question, the normal routine would be an early swim with probably snorkeling followed by a fresh water rinse and it may be repeated as often as the mood demands. The Evening salt water swim/wash with a good fresh rinse prior to the sundowners is always in order. Of course I'm generally in a rather warmer climate than some of you may be.

Proper cruising regime:

1. Kayak (and possible exploration ashore)
2. Shower (with shampoo)
3. Sail
4. Anchor
5. Swim
6. Quick freshwater rinse (no shampoo)
7. Read
8. Sundowner
9. Dinner
10. Red wine and a bit of guitar.

Steps three and four are optional, of course, and step 7 is mandatory. I'm told that some cruisers fish during the day, as well, but I have no idea how they find the time.
