American gun culture ? How about some more patronization with that comment? American Gun Culture is the reason we are still a Republic.

Re: Security - What do You Do ?

Ten days ago had the police aboard at the charter boat next door in the banyak islands 100nmiles offshore from the west coast of Sumatra. 8 police/army?? they had 4 shooters with 15mm assault rifles at point , with fingers on the triggers and hands in the captain's pockets!!!!!
How do you guard against official piracy? 11am in the morning??
Came aboard the other charter boat at 2am in the morning!!!

Also came aboard my boat, without the shooters, no problems, very nice people??

Maybe, but get rid of the desire (and need ) to arm yerselves against your own neighbours and you might become a civilisation.

Just sayin'

Dave, that is a futile argument. The facts present themselves. And youre more likely to lose your property in any country. The difference is the United States recognizes the inherent right to self defense and to be secure in your personal property. I know I know... Conflicts with the socialist agenda. What's yours is mine. Eh? But you Brits have it all figured out. Take a look at your own firearm homicide rates. Telling.

Re: Security - What do You Do ?

Hi Heron, I did not measure them, but asked one of the shooters "berapa millimeter?", he replied "lima blas", means 15 mm, maybe smaller, say 5.56mm, matbe I misheard him????? they were automatic rifles, with long clips in them, they told me they were made in Indonesia, not AK47's!!!
Anyway, had fairly gig muzzles.
The officers had large calibre pistols, short barrels over 1/2" calibre?
??????????
Keith.

Keith, 5.56 mm makes sense. Sorry that an armed authority caused you trouble. I would use that as the perfect reason we "civilians" should be armed at least as well as the "authorities". Makes for a polite and judicious society.

They're supposed to be for protection from the gubmint!

Hasn't been very effective though, has it?

Actually I am in a small outpost of the Empire (the last one?) - our gun laws are very liberal , except no concealed carry laws. Not only can folk own handguns (unlike in England) but also semi-automatics. and even stuff that needs a tripod . I suspect Bazookas are probably out though. probably.

and given we are one of the world's largest Tax Havens I think that puts us on the Freemarketeer end of the spectrum rather than Socialist.......but we do spread the prosperity around a tad more than other places. at least to the extent of not having a genocidal healthcare, system, if only for the reason that it would be impolite .

Well Dave, I don't need to flee to a remote portion of an empire. I can be sure to be legal in most states except for those I care not to venture to north of the Mason Dixon.

David, We have another saying. Goes something like this; An armed society is a polite society.
Just sayin.........
@ Keith, He was probably trying to say "AR15."

This thread is foolish. Threats of blinding people, killing people.

Very small padlocks so the boat is not torn up and insurance to cover the perils of a significant loss.
