Re: Need a New Name !

Boat Owners Association of the United States (Boat US) has compiled a list of over 8,500 boat names given to them by boaters over the last 20 years. That list can be seen at <www.BoatUS.com/boatgraphics/names>. Each year, the organization determines the top ten boat names. The current top ten names are:
  1. AquaHolic
  2. Andiamo (Let’s go)
  3. The Black Pearl
  4. La Belle Vita (The Beautiful Life)
  5. Mojo
  6. Island Time
  7. Second Wind
  8. No Worries
  9. Serenity
  10. Blue Moon

Re: Need a New Name !

Another name into the mix:
Ελένή
Greek for "Flame", "Torch", or the female name "Helen", at least that's what it says in the book I'm reading. I also found that it is the Greek term for St. Elmo's Fire ("corposant"), named after Saint Erasmus of Formiae, the Christian patron saint of sailors. A very formidable name.

This way I could name the boat after my wife (I'm a widow) but not have to change it if I marry again.

Re: Need a New Name !

Just to say that some Registries don't allow "foreign" script.

Plus you may want to bear in mind how to spell the name over the VHF. and to pronounce it

For those reasons I stuck with the English form of "Wayluya" and which I tell anyone who asks is Thai for...........PITA Might still put the Thai script on somewhere though. Not so concerned with what any new Mrs DOJ would think - she would have to be hardcore anyway to put up with an A4 picture of Wayluya in full wedding regalia.....over the bunk

My original pick for a name was a word that was the same in Russian and Inuit, the meaning of which was "open water in sea ice", my personal meaning was to be that my boat was my little patch of open water in the sea ice of life. In spirit it worked, but was not feasible for a name, so I waited for a name to come to me and eventually it did...this will be the finishing tough in my refit/transformation. AS my boat has a history in this town I will wait, but ROVER on VHFunfomfortable to me "This is Rover, over"

Real life incident - while living on board in Luperon, Dominican Republic it was common to get radio calls from "new" boats wanting assistance in finding the harbor entrance and then navigating the unmarked passage.
- - One morning we get a call from a new boat and when asked to describe where he was - the rely was "I don't know". It was all downhill from there until we realized that the boat name was "I don't know" and then things made sense and we could guide the poor fellow to the harbor.
- - Another name we saw was on a power yacht where the guy had named the boat "Honey, I want" explaining to us that it was the most used phrase he wife spoke.
- - Here is another "dangerous" name for a boat . . .

Re: Need a New Name !

I'm thinking something simple like, "Inspiration".

Or just call it "Boat".

Re: Need a New Name !

I have a friend who called her boat "Sweet Tart" ...

a very nice, wonderful, funny female (captain) name ...
epecially after you called her a few times on the VHF ...

a bad example would be a boat named "Southbound" while sailing North . ...

Re: Need a New Name !

In the "Nautical Oddities" thread there is a frieghter named "Titan Uranus". One of the following coments points out how it would sound in a distress call (or in response to a distress call).
