This is the part that is confusing.

Let's say I move onto your boat to find two bilge pumps shot and all the batteries out of water. Sure I could supply the labor but who pays for the pumps and batteries.

There are a myriad of other details that are missing here.

What would you do if you were cruising on a boat that you did not own and the two bilge pumps stopped working and the batteries were out of water? Would you wait for the boat owner to provide new pumps and batteries? What would you do if you ran aground and the boat owner was not available to refloat the boat? What would you do if you blew out the mainsail?

Depends, if I'm operating as paid crew to operate and maintain a vessel I'd handle the situation a little differently than if I was borrowing a boat, or even my own boat.

To ask someone to take on the responsibility of care for your vessel and for them to treat it like their own leaves a lot of room open for questions. None of the questions I asked were answered in the quoted post. It's not my boat, it's yours......sure I could dump $2000 to maintain your boat, but why would I?

You're correct. Then on my dollar for your boat I'll replace one bilge pump with the cheapest one that fits, followed by a single starter battery to run a radio for an hour a day.

That's the problem with your proposition.

This is what this guy wants...in return for safekeeping/staying on his boat, you'll pay out of your pocket for its maintenance and upkeep; as if you owned the boat, which you don't.

Unfortunately, this will cost more than a charter would. No one in his/her right mind would accept such terms. Good luck!

Am I to understand that it costs more to maintain and upkeep than the cost of the boat?
