Hull Slapping

Does anyone have a fix for the water slapping sounds while moored? I have heard of pipexinsulation threaded onto a rope or using swinning pool noodles. Anh ideas welckme to ensure a good night sleep.
I've tried earplugs, three good whiskeys and booking into a hotel but the problem is still there

i love these sounds. each one is different and each one means something.changes in these sounds can be danger or pleasant ...you need to be able to figure these sounds out so you know what is happening with your boat. is all a part of it.

the best "fix" for it is selling the boat and buying an rv. they dont have water under them

It depends where the water is slapping and why its slapping there. If your bum is slightly out of the water you can get a bit of slap underneath. In this case you could try adding some aft weight to get the bottom of the hull under water.

If its side slap on the bow, it could be that the water and waves arent in the exact same direction. You could add a bridle between the bow and midship and angle the boat more to the waves rather than the wind.

Personally, I love the sound. Its a much better sound than the neighbors Dog, garbage trucks, Worked V8 cars, Harley Davidsons (don get me started), and so many other land based sounds we are forced to sleep with in suburbia.

Thanks Ozskipper I am moored in Sydney harbour and the slapping is on the sides of the hull. Will try your suggestion but must admid I'm getting use to the sound and its not all that loud.

Ah.. on "the harbour" that's different as you naturally lots of traffic from Ferries and other boats. It may be something you have to live with unless you move up into Middle harbour or up lane cover/parramatta rivers where its quieter.

POOL NOODLES are good, have you tried anchoring in calm water?

You're on a boat, in the water! What do you expect? Your ears are sometimes better than eyes on a boat. Listen to the different sounds and get used to them. Now if you hear a strange noise it's time to check things out.

Yes, those are the solutions. Anything else costs a lot more, like pool noodles with "marine" stamped on them.

You didn't say what kind of whiskey. It could be read two different ways:

1. three "good" whiskeys, in which case quality comes into play

2. "three good" whiskeys, in which case quantity comes into play

You may wish to simply continue getting accustomed to the sound and use the sound, as Zeehag suggests, to intepret your boat's situation. When anchored, the sudden absence of this sound can alert you to dragging or a change in the sound can alert you to weather changes. Think of it as nature's automatic ap download!

When I first started driving a truck, I pulled a refrigerated trailer. First few weeks with the reefer unit running at full blast keeping the produce cool, I barely slept.

After a while I never knew it was even on. You'll get used to it. So much so you'll be wide awake trying to sleep in a quite room.
