I used to live on a river and the ice would stack up like cordwood sometimes six to eight feet thick and take trees and boulders at will. Quite a formidable force. My boat would not survive, or at least I don't think it would.

We are on the back side of an islan away from the main channel so we don’t get much big stuff. An occasional branch or log is about it in the spring. Standard procedure is to poke around the boat especially the stern and remove drift wood. I get something nearly every week in the spring. Spring is the worst time for cruising however as there is lots of drift wood. My neighbor wiped out a drive shaft and prop last spring.
