Cockpit Pleasant Light ....

I have been looking for a pleasant regulable light on the cockpit any sugestions ......

I´ve found my way with LED light, powered by AA-batteries. They don´t discharge my batteries and I have good light and while underway they don´t consume. Even more, they are with a self-off mechanism equipped, so they don´t discharge their batteries.

A hurricane lamp hanging off the end of the boom works for me for creating ambience. My permanent cockpit light is about 3 rows of "warm" LED strip lights stuck to the bottom of the solar panel. Because the solar panel is tiltable, I can change the amount of light in the cockpit simply by tilting the panel.

I like the idea of the Hurricane lamp, but I am affarid of how hot can get....It needs to be in the middle of the boom.....
At the moment I am using trying ...some different sets of led lights, but I am not getting the final situation.....

This isn't super bright but it's $20, solar, and portable. It's enough to make it not-dark and you could read if the light was ~2' away from your book. It's handy because we can use it for going to other people's boats, the beach, etc.

I don't feel any heat from it; not sure if that helps. It lights up that frosted globe that sits underneath it so it's fairly pleasant. The company (d.light) makes the lights for developing nations to use in place of kerosene and they're popular in the peace corps world as well. I'm a big fan of the company not only because of their products but also because so much of their goals are about providing quality products to impoverished people.

Oh well, melted sails and reefing lines are no big deal! There are small rechargeable "camp lites" that work pretty well.

That one also looks nice.... The problem that I find with leds, is that in lanterns usually the led placed is bright white.......I like to have more yellowish light, warmer. They do sell those warmer leds for separate, but in lanterns I did not see this yet...??

Check Ikea for LED strip lights. Lots of choices, some are adjustable, different colors, etc. We picked one that was cheap, uses hardly any power. Wired it to a 12v accessory plug. Gives enough light to eat and read by in the cockpit.

What do you mean " Wired it to a 12v accessory plug? " just remove the "transformer " and plug it ?

Yup. Check the specs on each fixture, but some of them have a 110VAC-12VDC transformer. Pick one of those, and you can just snip off the transformer and wire in a plug (polarity matters).

Yeah, not to big on the led's either. They do have them in Flourescent which I like a little better.
