I need to make up my mind about if I want to place a stop order today on West marine. There is little doubt that I jumped back in far to soon. The $6. mark seems to be where support is and $8. has met with resistance so I thought I saw a pattern. Now I see only down from here like Circuit city has been over the past year.

I made a mistake. West marine is in trouble and I think there is a good chance that I could lose a sizable part of my investment. It could go down with my other losers over the years like orbital engine, DNA plant technology, Hills stores, Starter, etc.

I was talking to an older store employee who has been there forever. They have a new CFO, but it will take time to do a turnaround. The old CFO was a guy who went strictly by the numbers and ignored a lot of customer issues because the numbers said they were not important. West Marine is certainly not a dead company and if there is such a thing as a turnaround for them then this might be the place to invest.

West Marine, in my area at least, is the only place I can get the everyday nuts and bolts kind of things that I need.....they HAVE no competition. They bought out their competitors or ran them out of business years ago. Although some may not consider this very ethical, this is exactly the type of company you want to invest in. Ask Jim Cramer. West Marine also has room for growth unlike companies like Starbucks or McDonalds which have pretty much saturated most markets.

That would be a bummer if they did go belly up. I don't know where I would buy things quickly since West Marine has bought out most all the other marine related retailers like BoatUS etc.

I do know that WM has changed for the better since Eisenberg took over (he was one of the original WM execs who came out of retirement). I just bought an inverter at WM after they matched Defender's internet price. I have to pay sales tax, but save the shipping cost, and I know that I can take it back to any WM store if there is a problem.

I also noticed in the store that they had dropped their prices on anchor chain down to competitive levels. Hopefully they will retool their entire pricing policy so I don't have to shop with a bunch of internet printouts in hand.

It wasn't just the pricing that went downhill under the non-sailing 'chain-store CEO's. I am looking at two pairs or WM brand seaboots in my hanging closet, which I had to drag out when I got to Newport a few weeks too early. The 15 year-old pair, marked "made in Malaysia" are fine, but the 5 year-old pair, marked "made in China" have deteriorated into a gooey mess.

When I stop at West they usually don't have what I want. Even stuff that is advertised in the mailings I get. The manager always says, we can order it and I reply "so can I, from Defender."
