Re: Hauled yesterday, snowed today

Yes I share the pain. Hauled last week and framed and tarped up yesterday in Penetanguishene. Today it is wet slushy snow. However since the boat will be laid up for 6 months my 40 year old hull may be looked at as a 20 year old boat. Optimism.

Come to SW FL. Season starting in earnest - no more humidity and daily 4pm thunderstorms!

Re: Hauled yesterday, snowed today

We're out in Michigan (the state that four out of five Great Lakes prefer) and it's only 193 days to go before our splash date - not that we're counting! I expect that in a little over six months, I can make a good start on all the boat projects I have to do before spring.

+1 to Crew of Turning -- my 17 year-old boat is still under a decade in real water time.

I can't say that I know the cause of global warming. I can say I could handle an extra month of summer on the Great Lakes. And while I'm not spraying hairspray into the ozone, I would quietly be happy to trade Tuvalu and Miami for an eight month summer on the inland sea.

I don't share your pain but I remember it well from my years in Minnesota. And I recall meeting a few of the nicest northern fruitcakes there too.

So if most of them live in CA, why are so many of them running for President?

Re: Hauled yesterday, snowed today

And a note to the others reading this -- those of us in the Great Lakes and similar areas are about to become (more) annoying on the forum, because we're bored and want to read and comment on anything sailing related.

Please bear with us.

Re: Hauled yesterday, snowed today

I have a vague and uncomfortable memory of water getting hard and people driving trucks on it and then cutting holes through it and erecting houses on to fish and drink beer. No, it must have been a bad dream!

Re: Hauled yesterday, snowed today

We are to be hauled out tomorrow here in Green Cove Springs, FL. Frankly, we can't stand the heat. We finished the Loop, Cuba, Haiti, DR, and Puerto Rico over the last five months. Typically we leave the boat someplace in the Caribbean or a southern state and go back to western NY, south of Buffalo, for winter. We ski. But after this past summer we are done with the hot weather. Floridians, you can keep it. We will return the boat to the Great Lakes for the foreseeable future. Can't wait to sail across any one of them in August with a sweater on. It's snowing at home! The shovel will be by the door and plow on the truck by the end of next week!

Re: Hauled yesterday, snowed today

Now that's an interesting take on it!

We haven't yet had the occasion to sail in the south; we'll do it at some point to see what we think but I'm really not sure ti will be ideal because neither of us really likes hot weather.

We love sailing in our temperate climate in the summer - can someone find me a temperate climate to sail in during our winter?

Re: Hauled yesterday, snowed today

The irony about CA is that people in Boston, or on the Great Lakes use their boats more. This despite ideal sailing weather in CA daily, year round. Always used to baffle me, but then I had the keys to nigh on any boat I wanted when I was in CA, & was on the water 5-6 days in 7, so... As my best mate put it, "it's like being rich, without having to pay the taxes"

Re: Hauled yesterday, snowed today

Hauled last week and painted the bottom last weekend. Snow is putting a damper on sanding and finishing the teak. Cover goes on this weekend. Only 5 months to go to sailing season.

Re: Hauled yesterday, snowed today

We hauled on Monday, snow on Wednesday. The ground is still warm, fall color is lingering, so we should have a week or two to finish winterizing.

All it takes is one glorious June morning, headed north from Red 8 on Grand Traverse Bay to forget all about winter, and understand why we love living up north..
