Bronze Manual Windlass

This bronze windlass has been on the bow of my Van de Stadt Rebel 41 ever since she was launched from Southern Ocean Shipyards in England back in 1964, and it is still working fine. The chain gypsy is for 5/16" BBB chain. The rope gypsy is for... well... rope. Based on my googling, the windlass looks almost identical to the ABI windlasses, but the only identifying mark is "AW57".

An identical windlass (albeit slightly shinier) was posted on the forum back in 2008 by jrogers, and appears to have sold then for around $500 US: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ass-54847.html

The original handle went for a swim years ago, but I had a new handle fabricated.

Let me know if you're interested.

Re: Bronze Manual Windlass

If I had a bigger classic I'd be buying it right now! You might consider putting a link to this in the thread:
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...160329-38.html

I bet someone there will be very interested.

...or maybe I'll go buy a bigger classic for myself that will fit it.

Re: Bronze Manual Windlass

Thanks, Don. I'll see if I can do that. I just joined the forum today (I've anonymously browsed it for hours, but never actually signed up), and just subscribed to my first thread: Plastic classics!

Now, let's see if I can figure out how to link!

Re: Bronze Manual Windlass

Hi Newhaul - I'll actually be in Seattle next weekend, albeit only for a quick visit, so if you're interested that might work out. I was thinking something around $500 (based on jrogers' 2008 post), but would consider reasonable offers.

Re: Bronze Manual Windlass

We're geographically close, and close enough on price too, so I am sure we can work something out, newhaul. I can do $350, provided you can figure a way to get it. I travel to Pt. Roberts on occasion, if that helps. My wife has told me in no uncertain terms that she wants "it" out of "her" dining room, but it's too heavy for her to lift so there's little risk of it being thrown out in the meantime.

I have the exact same windlass... and my handle also is gone. Any details you could give on how you had one fabricated would be very helpful. It's a tank! Mine hasn't has any maintenance in years and works perfectly. It's on my 1965 Alberg 35.

Re: Bronze Manual Windlass

Hi Jim - I realize I never replied to you! Perhaps “fabricated” is a bit of an overstatement. The new handle was simply a metal bar about s foot long and the right dimension to fit the slot on the windlass, with some rope whipped at the top for a handle. The original handle was more elegant: a bronze tubular piece, with the bottom squeezed to the right dimension.
