ps: i hate being so tied into apple but once they got ya, your screwed!
You should take a look at Plex.

I. Am doing a similar system except on a linux mini PC to drive video/audio, all controllable via phone app

I like Kodi and Tubi also as they work well on my Firestick with the VPN, so we are “in” America when watching movies.

Re: Watching movies when cruising offshore

I use the Playon Desktop at home to download anything I can stream to a 128GB flash drive.
https://www.playon.tv/
Then I have a Raspberry Pi with LibreELEC on it and only need a mouse to control it. No internet needed.
https://libreelec.tv/
I've been using this for over 2 years and love it.

Art.

The Enigma2 plugin is not bad, it talks to all the Linux Sat boxes, and is able to play back BR, DVD, 4k etc. Lots of codecs, network protocols and filesystems supported.

That's what Apple hopes. Namely that people are too lethargic to bother to switch.

However, it really is not true. You can add an email account to any other account such as a www.Outlook.com one. You can move your saved files or access them in other ways.

The only gotcha is Facetime but then nobody should be using such a proprietary system anyway. Switch to WhatsApp and/or Skype. Sell the Apple phone on eBay and buy an Android one without a contract.

Yes, but the delivery platform is still hardware agnostic.

Re: Watching movies when cruising offshore

I have a 34 ft sailboat. I plug my 13" laptop in to the aux on the built in stereo. Nice sound, small screen. You can pre download content from a lot of the streaming services nowadays. I don't have an inverter but I have an add on battery on my laptop so it lasts 6 hours at least, and I don't use it for navigation or anything else, unless we're at a marina with wifi.

Re: Watching movies when cruising offshore

This is a bit involved:

While cruising the coast, use a popular tool to break into shore WIFI networks
Use Bittorrent to rip as many movies as possible from the internet using a laptop
Use VLC to play them
???
Enjoy

You can buy 12 V cigarette lighter sockets on eBay. Wire them into any of your 12 cables. You can also buy on eBay a cable for your laptop that uses a 12 V socket and converts to your laptop voltage. KISS😁

Re: Watching movies when cruising offshore

I use an Amazon Fire Stick and either use marina wifi or my cell phone as a hot spot. Works very well and a short YouTube video will show you how to unlock Amazon Fire stick

Hope it helps!

The one I have has two tuners so you can watch one channel whilst recording another. Also has multiple HDMI and runs two TVs, I have one in the saloon and a second at my bunk. Great gadget.
