Narragansett Bay Gurus

The wife and I are in the process of boat hunting with a very good lead on one right now. When we get it/one we are going to put it in Narraganssett bay most likely in Warwick as it is only 50 mins from our house. We have been on Lake Winnipesaukee for a long time and want to make the jump, but one thing my wife really likes about the lake are the destination ports/towns on the lake. There is always a town to visit / activity to do, if you so choose.

Can anyone tell me what the Narragansett area is like in that regard? i.e docks/towns to visit/shop/etc....via water. Since we still have 2 very small children (1 and 4) long trips are going to be limited for a while. We plan on plenty of overnights at anchor but want to be able to take the kids somewhere entertaining if they get restless. In addition to ports to visit, any knowledge of other kid friendly places or islands to hike on / explore would be appreciated.

There are far to many great places to go in the Narragansett Bay, RI area to describe in the detail you ask for.

Much better to just go to ActiveCaptain and check out all the anchorages and detailed descriptions from cruisers that have posted there reviews both good and bad.

Thats wonderful to hear. Do you have any favorites whether it be a port or anchorage or other?

Our favorite has been Newport, RI.
Kid friendly and lots to do and see.

Next would be Bristol Harbor and a visit to the Herreshoff Museum.

I'll second this. Newport is a must do and maybe better for the kids. Personally I like Bristol as a little less touristy. The Herreshoff Museum in Bristol is definitely a must do.

Also, Bristol is reputed to have one of the biggest and best 4th of July celebrations in the country, certainly one of the best for a small town.

Both towns are very walkable for boating visitors.

Lots and lots of places to anchor around the bay. My son-in-law grew up boating there and spent a lot of time around Prudence Island.

If you want to expand your horizons it isn't far to New Bedford to the east or the CT shore to the west. Mystic Seaport would be a great trip for a long weekend.

Thanks guys. I'm scouring activecaptain now. I love Newport, been there tons by land but I can not wait to do it by sea. Definitely have to go to the Red Parrot for a sundowner once we get there!
