Is this the problem with the younger generation?

Here is a beautiful advertisement from a April 2019 magazine. A young family is aboard a beautiful boat. It is a tropical Caribbean location with Montserrat in the distance and everyone wearing shorts. It's a beautiful day on the ocean on a beautiful new motor yacht.

But wait -- mom and the kids are inside the cabin on the couch watching the large flat screen which dad is now operating via iPad. He finds a movie of... the ocean!

Yes, they are on the sea in a boat but choose to watch a movie of someone else in the sea. Furthermore, they are watching on a satellite broadband receiver and paying 10x what it would cost to watch it at home.

Whatever happened to Reality?!
Enjoy the coming spring - in person.

1) it's not limited by generation, it's just the way society is going. Humans, for the most part, take the path requiring least effort. Experiencing life via VR takes less effort. Right or wrong you're not going to change human nature.

2) if your selling a connectivity service you're not going to show people disconnecting.

I don't think anyone should be shamed for enjoying their own version of paradise.

Personally, I see a young well off family enjoying their success. They've been snorkeling all morning and now have showered off and gotten dressed up for fancy lunch with the grandparents. The kids want to learn more about the ocean, and it's gotten a bit gray and windy out, so the Dad has loaded up a documentary on seals for them to watch while he takes the boat in the Marina.

Re: Is this the problem with the younger generation?

They are selling a satellite TV upgrade on a new boat...do you think it would sell better if the kids were scrubbing out an oily bilge on a 40yr old boat?

But to the general idea...so what if they want to watch a movie?

Two weeks ago we were on a safari and in the evenings, we would watch youtube of the next destination to have an idea of what to look for.

Not everyone thinks cruising is about being alone and using the minimum of modern technology.

Kids/people haven't changed. It's only the technology we employ to avoid reality, that has changed.

Given the choice most avoid Reality.

Problems only arise when that reality changes and the choice gets taken away.

Being a responsible parent is a huge part of the reality many of us as a species are avoiding.

The kids will have to figure things out for themselves, I don't envy them the transition.

Re: Is this the problem with the younger generation?

Looks like we might need to change it from 'Cruisers Forum' to 'Cruisers and Philosophers Forum"...

Nonetheless, we change technology, and, being protoplasmic beings still subject to the laws of evolution, technology changes us.

The current concern is that for the last 100 years or so (some might put the number at 10000), technology seems to have exceeded the evolutionarily adaptive capacities of the human species, or indeed, the planet itself..

Re: Is this the problem with the younger generation?

In the 50s you had ads like "the harder a wife works the cuter she looks" and "doctors love camel cigarettes" and plenty other sexist, racist, and all kinds of messed up garbage.

If we are using these ads to criticize the current generation, what does this say about yours? (you can see how this is unfair).

Re: Is this the problem with the younger generation?

just to admit to all - I spend much of my day in front of multiple screens running three apps. and when onboard I supply my boat with wifi on a fast network so we can work if needed at anchor.

no escaping online work.

Meanwhile closer inshore, someone on a 25ft mono just chucked a grapnel anchor in on the end of 5m of old rope and swam ashore to to have a cold beer at happy hour with the other cruisers in the beach side bar

Hopefully many will choose the "VR life" and our anchorages won't be crowded anymore. Maybe even the Med becomes a peaceful sailing ground one day...
